Coldest Civilization In The Southern Hemisphere?

football forum

Recommended Posts

An interesting topic I saw on another forum.

It is common belief that the Northern Hemisphere is colder than the South. That is false. The coldest parts of the Southern Hemisphere not counting the arctic regions, are all Ocean. However, of course no one but fish live here.

So a fun little game I wanted you to play: try and find the coldest southern hemisphere town on earth. Could be on a mountain, could be in the subpolar regions of South America, you be the judge.

Anyways, I found Rio Grande from Argentina to be the coldest annually but Cohayique Alto has the lowest recorded temperature in South American history at -37.

I'm sure @Berserker could answer this for us.

Coldest being the annual mean temperature or the record low?

Potentially something in Tierra del Fuego I'd guess...

I'll bring 2 places

La Rinconada in Peru (5000 metres above sea level)

Las Cuevas in Mendoza (3400 metres above sea level but more South.)

I think they can be brought up in this.

Isn't it somewhere in Chile?

My friend went travelling to SA and they made a point of going to one of the coldest places/cities there.

Where did he go? Do you remember clearly?

I might be going to Punta Arenas later this year...

Absolutely no idea mate, just remember it was southern Chile.

I googled coldest cities in the world... and the only one that was in the Southern Hemisphere (which was the coldest one of all) was in Antarctica. But if we're not including the arctic regions... then I don't know what the answer is.
