The Thin Red Line (1998) War - 7/5-10

The Longest Day & The Battle of the Bulge was far better than this and even the 1964 version with Jack Warden shaded it, not enough action for me and the film was never classed as a remake of the 1964 version.

That's because it's not a remake - both the 1964 and 1998 movies are loose adaptations of James Jones' s novel! It's an anti-war movie, first and foremost.

Still prefered the other films mentioned, loved Nick Nolte though as the Lt Colonel yelling down the walkie with the veins on his neck sticking out. xD

Yeah, Terence Malick's style is definitely not for everyone, so I can understand that! I personally love it, but if you're looking for action and a rather fast-paced, straightforward story, then Malick's movies are definitely not the best choice :D  Don't think you can even compare it to the war movies like The Longest Day or Battle of the Bulge though, as those two are pretty much detailed accounts of a specific historical battle, whereas The Thin Red Line is more of an introspective and pensive look into broader philosophical themes and ideas, particularly the nature of war, human condition, life and death, creation and destruction, harmony and chaos. I haven't seen a more poetic movie...

True I would imagine when you saw them enjoying the sea and playing some games, supping bottles of whisky and what not then going back into reality and battle with the horror of war, I can remember my old man who was in the subs during WWII telling us stories of pulling dead bodies out of the water all bloated up and one particular young lad who had just arrived straight from training and when they turned the body over looking for an ID for records and forward onto beloved ones the dead person groaned because all of the seawater in their body, the young rating fainted on the spot.

Then my tours of duty and walking into mortuaries as part of our duties the things you saw in there I would not describe in here and I still get small flashbacks to this day as they are still there in the back of my mind.

Then you would have a few hours off and sometimes even a whole day where we would try and keep ourselves amused as we were not allowed around the City Center (Belfast) as it was too dangerous, one amusement we did was have a 'Hillbilly Fight' as we called it in the corridor, our room consisted of 6 of us in bunk beds and we called our room 'The Rednecks', the room opposite us was 6 other guys called 'The Suckets'.

You would be lying on your bed and a knock would come on the door with a guy from the Suckets room and would say in an American Hillbilly tone "Us Suckets want a battle with your lot in 5 minutes..." which we accepted then all hell was broken loose for 10 minutes with guys kicking shite of each other, no holds barred with our Troop Sgt Major and Captain looking on both laughing their balls off when they thought it was getting too messy with the blood they would end the Hillbilly fight with buckets of water all over us which we knew that it was time to clear up the mess and recover from our wounds. xD

Freaks (2018) - Horror/Thriller - 8/10

Lost track of it near the end as I was drinking wine but not a bad film and even the wife enjoyed watching it with the occasional small screams in-between. xD

A seven-year-old girl, Chloe, who lives with her father, was told that the outside world was dangerous and was spending lonely days in her house.

The IceRoad (2021) - Liam Neeson - 8/10

Quite enjoyed this one and had me sitting on the edge of the sofa with some of the scenes on the icy road.

After a remote diamond mine collapses in far northern Canada, a ‘big-rig ice road driver must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners.

Speaking of poetic movies...

Fast 45 6.5/10 - The latest installment of the Fast movies that somehow became a franchise. Mostly saw it because its mindless entertainment and they just reopened theatres here in the last couple weeks.... also because were in the middle of a ridiculous heatwave... was 43 Celsius yesterday... actually the hottest its been here probably in my lifetime.. for comparrison our summers 'hottest' months at least in town are in the low 30's tops. Anyways onto the movie... just that.. mindless entertainment. Some good cheesie lines with some super over the top action... the best part is the Pontiac Fiero with a jet engine strapped to it... spoiler. Its kind of funny where they went with the series as it started at as a genuine car/tuner race movies and turned into hollywood action movies. Anyways set your expectations accordingly and youll be alright.

Been on a bit of a movie marathon of late. All movies I've seen before but rewatched for various reasons.

Meet Joe Black 7/10 (wife wanted to watch it)

Brad Pitt movie, bit slow but decent enough storyline about death wanting to feel what life is like.

Pretty Women 7/10 (wife wanted to watch it)

Don't think I need to explain this one, still don't know how people can find a rich man falling for a low grade street prostitute romantic. Why wouldn't he go higher end.

John Wick 9/10

Absolutely love this movie, love it when it dawns on the gang that they've killed John Wicks dog. They unleashed the devil.

Taken 10/10

Can watch this series of films over and over. Amazing movie.

The Inbetweeners 5/10

Funny but not a scratch on the TV series.

The only one I have not watched out of the lot you watched was Meet Joe Black, if you like Liam Neeson then watch The Ice Road just been released, a good movie that one and as I mentioned above in a post some of the scenes on the frozen ice road had me sitting on the edge of my sofa.

Just purchased John Wick 2 on my amazon account so I will be watching that shortly as I thought the first John Wick was brilliant.

Yeah will give that a look tomorrow night when we have a break from the football. Cheers John.

Loved the John Wick movies, brilliant.

As for good Liam Neeson movies we enjoyed the Grey, brilliant film if you haven't seen it.

Just watched the John Wick episode 2 and as per normal the first films of whatever are better than the follow-ups so I would give this 7.8/10,

Another good film with Neeson is the Unknown 2011, I would easily give this a 10/10 and the end scene was a classic with Neeson as Dr Martin Harris in the fight scene giving an evil stare at the person he was fighting gave me the shivers,

Four days after his car accident, Martin, a biochemist, wakes up to realise that an unknown person has taken his identity. Perplexed and suffering from memory gaps, he sets out to discover the truth.

Couldn't agree more, the first two seemed to have more storylines to them the third was just overkill on the fight scenes.

That's the problem with films in episodes, I enjoyed Rambo - First Blood, yet when they made Rambo2 I didn't think it was good as the first and never bothered watching the follow-ups, the same as the Stalone Rocky films, I watched 1&2 but never bothered with the rest there is only 3 films I will watch all the follow-ups again and again as I enjoyed them was...

  1. The Godfather films
  2. Die Hard
  3. Lethal Weapon

The Die Hard & Lethal Weapon films had a bit of action in them mixed with a bit of humour and I loved Lethal Weapon when they bought in the character Leo Getz played by Joe Pesci, that guy made me and the wife laugh our socks off.

Watched another old classic from back in the day and it hasn't aged well at all to be fair, cheesy backing music in scenes that made it sound like an old porno movie.

Boys n the hood

7/10

For those that haven't seen it, basically it's a story about a group of friends growing up in Crenshaw, LA in the late 80's, early 90's when gang violence was at it's peak in the area. Trey the main character has a role model of a father who want's to make his son realise the way out of the hood is with knowledge and success. Over the other side of the street live Ricky and Dough boy two brothers who couldn't be more different if they tried, one dreamed of making it as NFL player from being a small child whilst Dough boy was clearly on the wrong path from childhood.

Films like this really open your eyes to how difficult it must be raising you boys in the LA where gangland shootings are daily occurrence.

Awake

Watched this off watching the trailer alone, I wish I'd checked the IMDB.

Basically the world is hit by a strange phenomenon that knocks out all of the electrical power and prevents people sleeping. Scientists explain the processes of not sleeping for a period of time and the effects it has on the human body. Quickly things turn bad as people start to panic and lose their minds with exhaustion.

The actual story behind sounds good but the film is pants.

4/10
