How does he still have a job? If he was in charge of a football team, he'd be fired by now.

Bad year last year, and this year are sitting 7th behind the likes of Haas, AR, Renault, and the big 3.

How often is it that teams change managers?

Doesn't work like football to be honest!

Teams don't often change their managers unless it's drastically bad.

Christian Horner has been at Red Bull for years I think.

Ron Dennis was at McLaren for ages as well. Likewise Jean Todt at Ferrari. They were at their respective teams for decades.

Those aren't great examples as they're people who brought their teams huge success so obviously they stayed, but yeah it's really not like football. Brown can't have much of an impact on a racing team in just over a year. He might be under pressure if they don't show progress this year.

It's worth pointing out that Zak Brown wasn't in charge at the start of last season, he replaced Eric Boullier who resigned after intense pressure to do so.

This is Brown's first season with McLaren really and he's already making good progress to undo the dismal run they have been on - bringing rookie Lando Norris seems to be a good move at the moment and whilst he's had a horrendous start to the season Carlos Sainz Jr. is pretty quick. It's the first time in a long time that you could actually see McLaren making waves in the midfield whereas under Boullier they were pretty terrible.

If you want to point a finger at a Team Principal on borrowed time look at Claire Williams.

Yeah - I only mentioned Zak (wasn't aware he was that new to the role, mind you), because the name McLaren is a lot bigger than Williams. Add to that the fact that Claire's father started Williams racing and so her 'leash' is probably longer than that of Brown's, or another manager who's team is under-performing.

Is this our McLaren thread? They're having a great year so far. The only team in the midfield whose performance level has remained consistent between races (apart from Williams ). Looking like they'll comfortably bag 4th in the championship this year which would be their best effort since they came 3rd in 2012, back when they had a Mercedes engine and two champion drivers in Button and Hamilton.

Good decision. They're doing a great job. I know people tend to focus on Lando, because he's the young rookie, but Carlos has been beyond excellent so far this season. Really happy for him. Seems like a nice blok, also in the Netflix doc.

We really need to change that Zak Brown thread to a McLaren one :P

Good decision; both Norris and Sainz are good and talented young drivers and it's good to see McLaren seemingly back on track again.

Absolutely. They've been killing it and the chemistry between them seems awesome. It's a great team this year and whatever changes they've made has been fantastic. Incredibly likable and talented team.

A big credit of McLaren's current success goes to Zak Brown for getting a proper team together... Right people in place and sponsors on the car to get the team back on the right track.

Andreas Seidl was brilliant for both BMW (in DTM) and Porsche (in WEC/Le Mans/Motorsports department overall); and together with James Key, Pat Fry and Gil de Ferran that's a formidable squad of people who know what they're doing. As a Porsche fan I was sad to see him go, but I'm glad he's one of the people behind the (apparent) revival of McLaren.

Norris has certainly been the most impressive rookie for a while. It's a big shame for Russell who actually beat Norris in F2 last season but doesn't have the car to do more than beat Kubica who is so slow this year that he'd struggle to keep up with Luca Badoer, so you can't tell whether Russell is just going pretty well or incredibly well.

Then: constantly winning races and world championships.

Now: no podiums in 5 years, no constructors championship for nearly 20 years, one drivers championship in 20 years.

Coincidence? :whistling:

Either way you have to admit their factory now looks cool as fuck. Like something out of a science-fiction movie.

Sainz goes onto 58 points today. Just 5 points behind Pierre Gasly in the Red Bull, and a full 27 points ahead of the next midfield driver, Kimi Raikkonen.

If Alonso had put together this run of 12 races in that car, people would be going on about how he's still the most complete driver on the grid and should have more than two championships. Sainz is certainly one to watch in the years to come even if he doesn't get the attention that Leclerc and Verstappen do.

I was talking about this today in a WhatsApp group about how quietly Sainz gets into the top 10. Quality race today, and certainly the 'best of the rest', as is McLaren in general.

Weird how things turn out. Together at Renault, Hulkenberg generally had the measure of Sainz. Now that's all forgotten as Carlos has been the class of the midfield and Hulkenberg has been average and is probably under some pressure to fight for his place in F1 for the first time in a while.

A bit off-topic but McLaren have finally announced their full-time entry in IndyCar in a partnership with Arrow SPM and Chevrolet in 2020. 40 years after their last full Indy season as a works team.
