Panna King 1,012 Posted May 13, 2019 Share Posted May 13, 2019 The curtain came down on Robin van Persie's glittering career with his Feyenoord side defeated 2-0 by ADO Den Haag on Sunday. The 35-year-old made his final career appearance in Feyenoord's last home league match of the season rather than round off his career in Wednesday's away fixture against Fortuna Sittard. He hit the woodwork in the first half and was substituted off in stoppage time, where he received a rapturous reception from the Feyenoord supporters. They held a banner aloft during the match to pay tribute, reading 'legends are forever'. Van Persie started his career with Feyenoord and rejoined them in January 2018. He has kept up an impressive scoring record in that time, netting 25 times in 49 appearances in his second spell. The striker also bows out of football as the Premier League's highest scoring Dutchman with 144 goals from spells with Arsenal and Manchester United. Van Persie spent eight years with Arsenal, who he left Feyenoord for in 2004. He won the FA Cup under Arsene Wenger before leaving for United in 2012. There, he spearheaded United's charge to Premier League glory in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season as manager at Old Trafford. He left United and England in 2015, spending three years in Turkey with Fenerbahce before returning to hos boyhood club. On the international scene, Van Persie scored 50 goals in 102 appearances for Holland. He started the 2010 World Cup final, which Holland lost 1-0 to Spain in South Africa. Saw him a couple of times this season and the game against Ajax sticks out (think it was 6-2). Three goals stand out in his career: the volley vs Charlton the volley vs Villa the header vs Spain Absolute wand of a left-foot and enjoyed watching him in the Premier League. I think he will do some TV work next season and maybe in the long term he will be a coach, not sure if a manager but just coaching on the training ground. What happened we will jever know, but it was a shame he went in as a fill-in for the Man Utd ensuing troubles instead of doing what was needed. Top player! Subscriber CaaC (John)+ 5,360 Posted May 13, 2019 Subscriber Share Posted May 13, 2019 If Fergie had not retired when he did I think he would have stayed a bit longer at United, heard on the media at the time when Fergie announced he was going to retire RVP was gutted as Fergie was one of the reasons why he joined United, once Fergie left RVP was never the same but it was Louis Van Gaal that fucked him up for good, he didn't want Robin at United and more or less forced him out and had him training with the reserves. Van Persie wanted to win the league, reading though the lines of the comments he has made in the past regarding leaving Arsenal, he didn't think Wenger was capable to compete anymore. Looking back he made the right decision for himself but for Arsenal it was a blow due to the fact he was best striker Arsenal have had since Thierry Henry and Arsenal fans are still very bitter about it. I don't hear much about them anymore in discussions of greats of yesterday. I hear a lot of Buffon and Ibrahimovic but not these 2. Perhaps due to longetivity. Casillas was terrible near the end of his time at Real Madrid, where as Buffon stayed consistent the last few years. Those effects do make some people forget.
