Maldini set for Milan

Paolo Maldini has agreed to become Milan’s new technical director, with Coach Marco Giampaolo to follow from Sampdoria.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports Maldini has accepted Milan’s offer, which will see him replace Leonardo in charge of the club’s technical area and given ‘full powers’.

Assisting him will be head of youth operations Angelo Carbone and chief scout Geoffrey Moncada, as well as a sporting director in the mould of Lazio’s Igli Tare.

The newspaper concludes Giampaolo will replace Gennaro Gattuso as he has ‘the required characteristics’ to coach the Rossoneri and has already informed Samp of his desire to move on.

The big question being, will Van Dijk become Liverpool's technical director one day  @Spike?

If Maldini can be as good of a technical defender as he was a defender, the rest of Serie A is in trouble and AC Milan are going to be a European powerhouse again.

Giampaolo officially announced as Milan First Team Coach. A solid and stable appointment.

I don't expect him to suddenly transform Milan, but perhaps a safe choice is needed for a couple of years. Gattuso was very volatile, and couldn't maintain the performances that his team could put on.

Would be nice if he is afforded that time, though. In football if there's not instant progress then fans can get very impatient. I hope he's given the time to bring such stability to the club whilst also getting them back on their way to being a seriously competitive team.

Milan's owners are far more interested in reducing their ridiculous expenditure and balancing their books. Of course, this coincides with success on the pitch but they need to grow the club's worth to sell them off.

They gave Gattuso a long leash and didn't even sack him, he only walked away from the club because of the scaling back of the club's footballing budget. The last thing they want to do is have a hefty payoff to a manager.
