Highest honor there is for military and civil distinction.

Sorry,  but since when did winning the WC have the same merit as soldiers sacrificing their lives or going beyond the call of duty? :what:

Find it very hard to morally agree with that, especially at a time when there's a lot of nostalgia and emotion around the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

No way should footballers receive the highest such order of honour. They're men kicking a ball around on some grass, simply speaking. Not men who literally go out to fight in wars and genuinely risk their lives or sacrifice them.

It seems an insensitive decision to give them such an award.

100% agree and some of those France footballers should’ve refused it and said why this should be like this. To think footballers have received the same honour as some Resistance members (and not even all of them) from WWII is abhorrent.

Isn't it the same as Knighting people in the UK?

I'd guess not because the highest honour/order in UK is Victoria Cross, no?

This isn't a military specific honour. They just honour whoever stands out in their field. Harvey Weinstein has one. This "highest honour" doesn't seem that prestigious.
