How should a cup of tea look?

Japan has a cold drink aptly named "milk tea". Terrible. But tea in Japan is mostly green tea or herbal stuff. Black tea was common-ish but so was tea with the option of milk!  I don't really drink normal black tea anymkre, but growing up in basically a British family the kettle was always on and would drink a lot of tea close to the top right but I prefer either no milk now or just the tiniest bit.

Green tea and coffee are my usual hot drinks.

I would say top row, second from left too.

This is how I make tea:

Boil kettle.

Decide which mug I want to drink from.

Wash mug out with water.

Throw tea bag in.

Realise tea bag is partially wet and some of the tea has escaped the bag.

Chuck the bag, wash the mug out again.

Watch the tele whilst I wait.

Get really into the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Forget about kettle.

Realise I've forgotten about kettle, boil water again.

Stand near kettle for what feels like a lifetime.

Chuck teabag in mug.

Pour water over teabag.

Act quickly to prevent scum from sitting at the top of the tea.

Pour milk in, make it too milky.

Grab another teabag, make it too teaish.

Pour more milk in, slightly over do it.

Chuck teabag back in.

Then pour a little milk back in.

One sugar.

Realise I don't actually enjoy tea that much.

Boil the kettle

stick a tea bag and one sugar in the cup

pour water in so it's about 3/4's full

stir it a bit and squeeze the tea bag with the spoon until it goes as dark as possible

chuck tea bag in the bin

add 1/4 of milk

stir again

get the rich tea biscuits out

soak up a full packet until there is no tea remaining in the cup

the other debate is how you make it. for me, only ONE way.

Teabag in the cup.
Hot water in.
Let it brew for a bit.
Teabag out.
Bit of milk in.
Sugar (optional obvs) in.

Stir.

Drink.

Done.

Boil the milk on the stove. Tip it in the cup. Add the bag and stir for 20 seconds. Remove then fill the balance of the cup with warm tap water.

Add a half teaspoon of drinking chocolate if its the before bed cuppa.

I don't drink tea but if i did, judging by looks i'd take either the second from left on the top row or the one below it.

Mate is similar to tea, isn't it?

Yeah, it is. You wouldn't usually add milk to it, but there was one year i did and it tasted fabulous. There's also mate cocido which is even more like tea as the yerba comes in bags as it's meant to compete with and replace tea, and that one you can typically add milk.

I aim for top left or bottom right (are they even different?) but I normally arse it up and pour too much.

Got no strict routine, since I don't always necessarily drink black tea, but:

If you're having milk, always add it last. No exceptions.

The square nature of the photo is strange, surely its symmetric.

There is two variables,  water/milk ratio and amount of time bag stays in but that doesn't explain that x-y layout as theres clearly increasing milk on both axis.

From where I come its weird for me to say this but bottom left is the one for me. Milk in tea is just bleh, why would you ruin the taste of a great bag of tea by putting a dairy product in it? Filling the glass all the way also ruins the taste of the tea completely and you might as well buy some ready-made powder put it in a glass of milk/water and drink that instead absolute gash.

Having said that though you'll find that over here they do it in so many variations of hit and miss its hard to say that you'll find one kind of tea that works right. I've seen a good masala chai done with the milk heated first into a luke warm cup of tea (1/3) and then I have also seen a hot tea mixed with milk and turned into a ginger tea which is great for days where you want to kick a cough.

Green tea has become popular over the years as well and a lot of people are now drinking it here but I like the classic's from companies like Mlesna (Sri Lankan) or Dalmia (Indian). Lipton is okay but ill pass and certainly pass on the other pop garbage like Twinnings, etc. they lack the taste or the strength displayed on the box.

I don't mind black tea when there's no milk in the house but preferably I'll have it quite milky - I can't be arsed having to sip it all the time because it's too hot, I'd rather just have a mouthful and get on with it :D
