Ex-Socceroos coach and football nomad Rudi Gutendorf dies aged 93

Globetrotting German football coach Rudi Gutendorf, who was in charge of the Socceroos between 1979 and 1981, has died at the age of 93.

Gutendorf's son Fabian confirmed the news late on Saturday.

"In him we are losing someone who has enriched us every day with his big heart and positivity," Gutendorf's family said in a statement.
Gutendorf, who was born in Koblenz on the Rhine river, died of old age, according to his son.

In a career that spanned 53 years, he coached in 28 countries from Antigua to Zimbabwe – winning the 1980 Oceania Nations Cup with Australia.

After the Socceroos had failed to qualify for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, Gutendorf was appointed by Soccer Federation President Sir Arthur George.
He sought to mould a team focused on local talent with an emphasis on youth development but he could not lead them to the 1982 World Cup in Spain, losing out to New Zealand.

Gutendorf's record with the Socceroos in 37 A and B internationals was 15 wins, 10 draws and 12 losses.

While his club coaching career was mainly in his native Germany, and early on in Switzerland, football took him around Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania, and Gutendorf touched many people.
"It makes us grateful and proud to have spent our lives at his side and we will never forget him," the family statement added.

"As a 'restless Rudi,' he was always a man full of energy and enthusiasm for his family and his beloved football."

He coached the national teams of Bermuda, Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, Trinidad &Tobago, Grenada, Antigua & Barbuda, Botswana, New Caledonia, Nepal, Tonga, Tanzania, Fiji, Sao Tome & Principe, Ghana, Iran (U-23), China, Mauritius, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

RIP! One of those names that was around forever.

R.I.P. Rudi!

MSV legend. He was the coach of a team that sensationally became Vizemeister in the first bundesliga season 1963/1964 with a team where almost all players where born and raised in Duisburg-Meiderich.  Still our greatest achievement.

There's a great documentary about that season.

After that, he made a name for himself all over the world.  Great person.

Rudi Gutendorf coached Rwanda during 1999-2000 as the country was recovering from the 1994 civil war

Manager Rudi Gutendorf, who holds a Guinness World Record for coaching 55 teams in 32 countries across five continents, has died aged 93.

Gutendorf's managerial career spanned half a century, including time at top-flight teams in his native Germany and 18 national sides that included Australia, China and Fiji.

'Restless Rudi' took his first management role with Swiss side Blue Stars Zurich in the 1950s, while his final job in management was with Samoa in 2003.

German FA vice-president, Dr Rainer Koch, called him an "outstanding ambassador of German football".

"We lose in him someone who has enriched us through his big heart and positivity every day," his family said.

"Riegel- Rudi" was a true legend and an interesting person, who did a lot for football development in non-European countries. Sad his gone, he reached an impressive age though. RIP

Nice obituary by TeBe: https://www.tebe.de/beitraege/tennis-borussia-trauert-um-rudi-gutendorf/

So apparently he put his Mercedes Cabrio up for auction in order to raise money for new signings when he took charge of TeBe :D

Coole Aktion.
