AFC Wimbledon manager Wally Downes has been suspended by the League One club after he was charged by the Football Association over bets placed on games.

The 58-year-old has been in charge of the Dons since December 2018.

"Wally has been charged by the FA for misconduct in respect of eight bets placed on matches between 30 November 2013 and 12 July 2019," said the club

"Given the seriousness of this breach in regulations, the club has decided to suspend Wally with immediate effect."

The Dons' statement continued: "[This will give] time for the club and Dons Trust boards to look at the allegations more closely and make a further announcement in due course."

Downes' side are 22nd in the third tier, without a win from their 10 league matches so far this season.

The club added that assistant manager Glyn Hodges and the rest of Downes' coaching staff will take charge of Saturday's away game against Peterborough United.

Former Dons midfielder and ex-Brentford manager Downes guided Wimbledon to a 20th-place finish last term.

An FA spokesperson added that Downes has until 4 October to respond to the charge.

In terms of gambling addictions (if any), I hope he gets any help required and there can be things in place to support gambling problems as it is a serious thing these days - it can be parasitic to people in that it can cause severe financial difficulties and pressure. It's terrible what it can do to people.

On the other hand, if you're involved in football clubs - either as players, staff, coaches, managers etc - you have to be fucking stupid to still put bets on games given how the rules are these days. You're just simply not allowed to do it. End of. There's no black and white about the ruling. Like I said though, if there's a problematic issue there, hope there's support in place that goes along with any punishment given out.

Wally Downes: AFC Wimbledon manager banned for four weeks for betting on matches

AFC Wimbledon manager Wally Downes has been suspended for four weeks after admitting breaching Football Association rules around betting.

Downes, 58, placed five bets on football matches between 30 November 2013 and 30 January 2014 and three bets between 16 March and 12 July 2019.

FA rules bar anyone employed by a football club from gambling on matches.

Downes, who was also fined £3,000, has been suspended by AFC Wimbledon since being charged last month.

The League One club have said they will make a "further statement in due course".

His 28-day ban from all football and football-related activity ends on 14 November.

Downes was a coach at Queens Park Rangers for a spell during the 2013-14 season, while he was appointed as AFC Wimbledon manager in December 2018.

Since his suspension, his assistant Glyn Hodges has been in caretaker charge.
