Dave Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Hungary The Magyars head into their second consecutive European Championship after impressing everybody in the group stages of Euro 2016. Road to Euro 2020 Hungary had to take an unconventional route to Euro 2020. They finished fourth behind Croatia, Wales and Slovakia in Group E, winning four and losing four of their eight games. However, they went into a playoff series thanks to their Uefa Nations League performances, where they beat Bulgaria and Iceland to seal their place at this tournament. What to Expect The majority of Hungary's success have occurred when they've allowed their wing-backs to push forward and provide support in the attack. If they fold and drop into a deep defensive block, there’s surely only so long they can hold out against the exceptional sides they'll face in this group. Possible Lineup Paulo Rossi has mostly stuck with 3-4-1-2 and 3-5-2 systems during his time in charge of Hungary. Peter Gulacsi is the undisputed first choice goalkeeper and that doesn't appear to be changing any time soon. Willi Orban will anchor the defence ahead of Adam Lang with Attila Szalai and Endre Botka likely to play either side of him. Adam Nagy is likely to sit in midfield to offer defensive protection which will allow Dominik Szoboszlai to play a more free role in midfield whilst Zsolt Kalmar is able to make supporting runs from midfield. Loic Nego and Filip Hoelander appear to be most trusted in the wing back positions ahead of Gergo Lovrencsics and Szilveszter Hangya Captain Adam Szalai's position seems secure upfront whilst we believe Nemanja Nikolics has done enough to be preferred ahead of Roland Sallai for this upcoming tournament. Key Player Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to be entrusted with somewhat of a free roll that will be integral to any success Hungary could have in this group. He will be given the freedom to drift horizontally, link up with wing-backs, create overloads on the wings and get close to Szalai for any possible knock-downs in the penalty area should the opportunity arise. A lot of hope and responsibility will be placed on this generational talent this tournament. Prediction Hungary are second only to North Macedonia as this summer’s outsiders with odds at 500/1. This would seem somewhat unfair at first until you see the opposition they face in the group stages. As co-hosts, they will play two of their group stage matches at the Puskas Arena but it would still be some story if they get anything from this group.
