Poland vs Ukraine - Friday 7th June 2024

Recommended Posts

Poland will host their big neighbours Ukraine in Warsaw in a friendly match before Euro 2024. This will be both Poland's and Ukraine's penultimate friendly match before they kick-off their Euro 2024 campaign. Poland have one more friendly after today's game against Turkey at home, while Ukraine have a final friendly match away to Moldova. It will be interesting to see who wins this evening's match between Poland and Ukraine though, as these two countries are big rivals. So despite this being a friendly match, we can expect both sides to give it their best to impress.

The line-ups are out and the Ukrainian manager Rebrov has rung the changes. Regular starters Tsyhankov, Mudryk, Zinchenko, Yaremchuk, Stepanenko, Brazhko, Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Trubin and Lunin are all on the bench. Ukrainian manager Rebrov is clearly giving many of the reserves a chance to prove themselves today and stake a claim to start at the Euros.

Walukiewicz bundles the ball past Bushchan to give Poland the lead in Warsaw!

Poland 1-0 Ukraine

Zielinski scores Poland's 2nd goal as his cross-shot found its way past Bushchan and into the Ukraine net. Bushchan really should have done better there, that will go down as his mistake.

Poland 2-0 Ukraine

Poland score a 3rd goal as Romanczuk heads the ball into the net from a cross from a corner. Ukraine's reserve defenders and the 3rd choice keeper Bushchan are having a nightmare today. Poland are pumped up for this match in front of a packed stadium.

Poland 3-0 Ukraine

Tymchyk has a close range shot brilliantly blocked by Polish keeper Skorupski, as the keeper stuck his leg out to block the shot and prevent it from ending up in the net.

Malinovskyi has a long range shot go narrowly wide of the Polish post!

What was learnt from this match from Ukraine's perspective, is that the centre backs Zabarnyi and Matviyenko are key players for Ukraine, as their absence from today's game showed. Ukraine's defence with them playing is almost always solid, that wasn't the case today in their absence. Moreover, Ukrainian keeper Bushchan is nowhere near the level of Lunin or Trubin. Bushchan who was Ukraine's number 1 keeper at Euro 2020, is known for his great shot stopping ability, but he is not the best in the aerial duals and he doesn't always make the best decisions when coming for crosses. Today he didn't look great when dealing with crosses and it is not too surprising that 2 of Poland's goals today came as a result of corners.

Bushchan should have done better with Poland's opening goal from Walukiewicz, as his shot went through Bushchan's legs and ended up in the goal. Bushchan should definitely have done better with Poland's 2nd goal which came from Zielinski. Zielinski's cross shot ended up in the back of the net, after Bushchan didn't react in time.

While with the 3rd Polish goal, Bushchan could have perhaps come out to claim the cross before it reached Romanczuk who managed to head the ball and score. Bushchan may generally be a very good shot stopper and he may have been Ukraine's best keeper at Euro 2020, but that is not the case anymore, as the younger world class keepers Lunin and Trubin are much better than him these days.

Ukraine also started with Yarmolenko and Zubkov as wingers. They are simply not on the level of Tsyhankov and Mudryk. Yarmolenko is someone who could be very useful as a substitute, because he can still be influential, but Tsyhankov and Mudryk have to start.

Also Sydorchuk who started today, is not as good in that defensive midfield position as Stepanenko, Brazhko or Malinovskyi. One of these 3 midfielders will start alongside Zinchenko at the Euros, it definitely won't be Sydorchuk, because he is not as good as them.

Of today's Ukrainian starting line-up, only 3 players are very likely to start for Ukraine at the Euros. With Ukraine's key players back, Ukraine will be a very tough team to beat.
