OrangeKhrush Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Quote Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Barcelona winger Raphinha after the Magpies increased their offer for the Brazilian, according to reports. The Geordies have already made four signings this summer with Lewis Hall, Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos all arriving in the first month of the transfer window. Newcastle have also seen Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh depart for Nottingham Forest and Brighton respectively but their next incoming may not be far away. It is believed that Eddie Howe and the Newcastle recruitment department are looking for a new attacker this summer too with former Leeds United star Raphinha continuing to be linked with a move for St James’ Park. There have been a number of reports insisting that Barcelona may choose to sacrifice Raphinha as they look to bring in some fresh faces over the summer. Barcelona’s financial situation means they have to sell to buy top players and reports in Spain claim that president Joan Laporta has ‘accepted’ an offer from Newcastle for Raphinha. It is understood that Newcastle have ‘raised’ their bid for Raphinha to €60m with the Premier League side said to be ‘closing in’ on a move for the Brazilian. We have been linked to Raphinha before and he seems to be a Eddie Howe player, insofar as he has been perused long before Ashworth took over. He is a big upgrade on Miguel Almiron who is likely to be moving to the Saudi Pro League, Raphinha does come with a north of 200k/week wages which would make him the highest paid player in our club by some margin. His age is also an issue as he is now at peak value age making his resale value a point of diminishing value. I personally prefer Matias Soule from Juventus and think he fits the age profile we are looking for and will come at a substantially lower price point. Source Quote

There seems to be potential developing for a Liverpool, Barcelona and Newcastle trade wheel. Liverpool want Gordon Barcelona want Diaz Newcastle want Raphinha (rumoured) Gordon has tremendous leverage here in that he is 22 years old on 60k for the next 4 years. Diaz is 27 and on 55k until his contract ends when he is 32 years and Raphinha has the worst value due to his 210k/week wages. Liverpool - Newcastle: Gordon > Liverpool Kelleher + 60m > Newcastle That will give us about 40m PSR profit on Gordon and get a long term keeper to eventually replace Pope. Liverpool - Barcelona: Diaz > Barcelona 70m That will give Liverpool a PSR profit of around 40m for Diaz after book debt. Newcastle - Barcelona Raphinha > Newcastle 40-45M Barcelona shed a high earner off their payroll however will need to lower the fee so that we can afford his salary. Raphinha is a major improvement on Almiron and we have Harvey Barnes on the Left so we have moved value to the other side of the pitch. Quote
Redcanuck Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Seems it has more to do with finance and PSR than desire to own the players. All those players play pretty well for their teams, can't see why they want to get rid of. Quote

In that scenario Liverpool get the best deal, they get a player 5 years younger, home grown and on low wages. The only benefit to us is shifting output to the RW given that Harvey Barnes is in the team and very capable of mitigating Gordon's loss, but we put the oldest player and most paid player on the books Quote
