Michel was capped 58 times by France who he coached from 1984 to 1988, leading Les Bleus to third place at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. He managed eight different countries and in his playing career he made over 500 appearances for Nantes winning three league titles. Michel took over France's Olympic men's squad in 1982, guiding them to the '84 gold medal in Los Angeles where they beat Brazil in the final.
