@Dave @Devil-Dick Willie have either of you ever been to an independent show where they have had a ladder match before. I'm hoping to go to one in a couple of weeks. I'm really looking forward to it because it will be close up. I'm not sure what to expect. Obviously the stuff they do in aew and wwe can be extremely dangerous if not done right and I'm not sure if wrestlers on the independent scene will be good enough to do some of those moves but it should be really good. I know dani luna is in one, Leon slater may be in another one.

In my experience the atmosphere in aew and wwe is nothing compared to independent shows.

AEW was very good this week. It does appear as if they have a bit more of a plan at the moment instead of just chucking things together.

I didn't really care that much about private party but they put a good back story behind the match which explained why they had another title shot and made me want them to win it.

Also they are doing suttle things like mbp phoning Bobby Lashley. Seems like a little thing but there were a few of these moments which really elevated the show. Wrestling is like that I think. There are so many suttle little details that can add up and make a show so much better.

Also I hated the ending of wrestledream but it does seem like it was worth it to really elevate moxley and his group. The ratings have gone up by 5 thousand or so 3 weeks in a row as well which is good. Aew was at its best when it did little suttle things like I said but kept the actual wrestling as the main thing. And there have been a few signs of that recently

@Devil-Dick Willie @Dave I was looking online earlier to see about getting a dvd of dominion 6.9 to watch omega v okada. The dvds are about £60 to £70. Obviously people know they can charge a lot for that one match the greedy bastards

Sign up for NJPW world. It's like $10 per month. You can watch any PPV or match from NJPWs history during that month at any time, then cancel before the end of the month.

I remember where I was when I watched that PPV live. A viewing party that was also a house party in the background. Dominion 2018 and 2019 are the peak of NJPW, before it's vets became broken old men. 2018, from the Elgin, Goto, Taichi match til the finish of the main event, might be the greatest PPV in history from a pure in ring perspective. Okada vs Omega was so good people who weren't there at all for the wrestling were all crowding around and hanging on the edge of their seats. Insane match.

@Dave I did watch smackdown this week. The story telling is excellent. The wrestling is fundamentally very sound I think. But I much prefer aews wrestling. Wwe feels like I'm watching a show with a bit of wrestling. Aew feels like I'm watching wrestling with a bit of a story. But that's just me. Aew is definitely aimed more at independent wrestling fans who are more interested in wrestling. But the presentation, the way they went to ring with Romans music on was amazing. Personally I'd love to take wwe's story telling and fundamentally sound wrestling  and professionalism ,mix it with aews more intense style, and less scripted promos.

It's quite interesting seeing the difference between aew and wwe now I've started watching wwe. Like I said in my previous post I'd like to take bits from both promotions. The most noticeable thing is how far ahead wwe's women's division is in terms of actual wrestling. Not sure about overall gimmick yet I'll have to watch more of wwe to see. (Plus Timeless Toni storm was a fantastic gimmick) but in terms of wrestling its like premier league and championship

You're both also missing the (literal) elephant in the room.

Look at UFC PPV numbers and look at their main and co main events. For some reason, probably involving homoeroticism, people specifically want to watch BIG men wrestle and fight. This is true across all combat sports. AEW has never embraced this and will continue to struggle as long as it goes ignored. There is a reason there are many talented wrestlers who weren't welcome in the big time. They're tiny and the general public audience doesn't care to see them.

Yeah but to be fair aews fan base doesn't like that. They prefer smaller more faster guys. And I do respect Tony Khan for keeping his core fan base that aew was built in happy. I don't think it's aew main issue anyway. A lot of it is booking and story telling. I think it started when cody left. I think he was involved in a lot of creative. When you look at what Cody has done since. Loosing him was the worst thing to happen to aew.

Also they don't capitalise on good opportunities. The stuff moxley is doing now is good, people do seem to like it. But it could be the best thing aew has ever done I think. A lot of aew fans are saying the same thing. It's good, but it's got so much potential and it's not quite delivering.

Also aew doesn't have that core fan base. There were two great episodes of dynamite recently. But then there was a bad one last week. Wwe has that core fan base. They can afford to put on a couple of bad shows. Aew can't do that.

And also wwe is doing some really good stuff. There is only so much wrestling you can watch in one week. Unless you really love wrestling you aren't going to watch 3 or 4 shows a week. So if you like wwe more, you may well miss dynamite

Great. You keep 500k people happy, and the rest of the world discontent. Also yes, they book like dogshit, and they have many more issues, but airing toddlers as threats has always been a big sticking point too when it comes to the general public, which is, you know, the audience they need to appeal to for growth and ratings.

Yeah I agree with you. The sweet spot is in the middle. Good matches that are driven by good stories to get you invested.

I think people do over exaggerate it a bit though. Most of the matches in aew do have a story behind them. Not to the same level as wwe but at the same time it's not like every match wwe does has an amazing story line behind it. I mean cody has a match next week with that guy he had a row with and pushed. So yes there is some story behind it but it's not a match with a lot of meaning is it.

Well aew isn't a public limited company so if Tony Khan doesn't want it to grow that's up to him. He's the one loosing money.

Aews core fan base likes these kinds of matches. If they want to see bigger guys watch wwe. Nothing wrong with keeping your core fan base that kept you in business happy.

You can only have 1 of these. He's either leading a dogshit enterprise that is losing daddies money because it is too engaged in it's niche and has only gradually lost audience over time, or appealing to his core fan base is the key to success and ongoing prosperity (hint it's the first one).

Loosing money was the wrong wording. I mean he's not making the money he could be making. And as I said if he wants to do that to keep that core fan base happy that's up to him. And before you say aew is not making money we don't have that information. And before you come up with some reason as to why aew isn't making money there have been articles written online about it that disagree with eachother. The fact is no one knows if it making money or not for sure

You know how we know the Trump appointed AG is a pedo? Because the document that would either incriminate or exonerate him is being withheld. If it exonerated him, it would have been made public.

If AEW was profitable, they wouldn't keep their financials a secret.
