So he was wanted by top Italian and English clubs as well as BVB, but instead goes to Gladbach. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Maybe those clubs didn't end up actually bidding, or Gladbach offered a better financial deal.

Yeah, maybe. I am just annoyed that we seem to not be able to integrate our best talents into the first team and end up losing them

Maybe he expects some actual playing time at Gladbach. Elvedi seems on his way out, Friedrich wasn't too happy with his playing time last season and talked about leaving, that would leave Chiarodia and Itakura as the only remaning CB's at Gladbach.

Would they really go into the season with an 18 year old as one of the main CBs though?

Maybe. Could be a high risk, high reward kind of situation. Like Dortmund with Hummels and Subotic back in the day.
