The Liquidator
Seems strange that after 24 replies to this question nobody has spoken of Cahill being played out of position, since John Terry was injured early in the season. Gary is a right sided centre half who has moved over to the left side of a three. Not only has he been asked to do this for club, but of late, with the England manager deciding to go along with Conte’s 3 at the back, Gary finds himself left side of the 3 for England too. For sure, there have been times when Gary has been caught out playing in this foreign position. Away to City springs to mind when he went for a ball with his favoured right foot, wears a natural left footer would have dealt with the cross far better. He also had to contend with a left wing back who defensive quality’s were not as good as the right sided wing back at Chelsea. Alonso is slow and was often caught out up the field, exposing Gary to tricky ball playing players he would not have been asked as often to mark when in a 4. He did well over the season playing in a brand new position and it did not go un-noticed by his fellow professionals who voted him to the team of the year. Hardly grounds to ask if he is being carried.
Lucas
Harsh. I think Cahill is decent, 17 hours ago, The Liquidator said: He did well over the season playing in a brand new position and it did not go un-noticed by his fellow professionals who voted him to the team of the year. Virgil Van Dijk didn't make Team of the Year but he's better than Cahill. As is Toby Alderweireld and possibly Jan Vertonghen. But because Cahill played more games and was Captain, he will get more recognition because of that. IMO Cahill is a better than average CB. I don't think it's entirely fair to say he's being carried, he's in the Chelsea team on merit and played his part in them winning the league. And he's probably the best CB we have currently in the country given John Stones has been playing like Bambi on Ice. He wasn't great against France but then who was for England? Obviously he pales in quality to some of the best CB's we've had represent us over the past 20 odd years or so, he doesn't come close to these guys (Sol Campbell, Tony Adams, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Gareth Southgate, Des Walker) but could you honestly say David Luiz for example next to him is miles better? I don't think you could.
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted June 19, 2017 Subscriber Share Posted June 19, 2017 I'd happily have Cahill at Everton so he could be "carried" there too. Possibly not at the same standard as some of Chelsea's other players but far from being carried.
