Hornby was the top forward for the Scottish Under 21 national team a couple of years ago, in fact he holds the record for the most number of goals ever scored by a player for the Scottish Under 21's. A lot was expected of him, but injuries have kind of held him back. Nonetheless, he got the transfer to mid-table French side Reims 3 years ago from Everton. The youngster gained valuable experience in the top tier of French football with Reims, despite having numerous injury set-backs while at the French club. He has had loan spells so far during his career to Kortrijk in Belgium and to Aberdeen in Scotland, with again both these spells hampered by injuries. But his most successful loan spell came last season while playing for Oostende in Belgium's top division. Despite missing 11 league matches due to injury, he played a very influential role for the club, scoring 8 league goals during the season and setting up many other goals. However, his goals and his good performances, weren't enough to save Oostend from relegation. Hornby is a tall, robust forward, who is very impressive with his aerial ability. But he is not just a threat in the air, as he is also known for his work rate and his ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Moreover, he has an eye for goal and a good shot on him. There's been a lot of doubt among the fans as he's unproven but that sounds just like the guy we need in our attack. However, if he can stay fit, I don't think there is much doubting his talent. Last season, Hornby averaged almost 1 goal every 2 league games for an attack shy team in Oostend, a team that eventually got relegated. Furthermore, among other teams, Hornby scored goals against top league sides Ghent, Club Brugge as well as the eventual champions of the Belgian league, Genk! Hornby first caught my eye at the 2018 Toulon Tournament in France. Hornby was only 18 at the time, but he lead the line for Scotland excellently at that tournament and he was one of their best players. Hornby scored a couple of goals in the competition and helped Scotland reach the semi-finals, defeating the hosts France along the way. But like I said, Hornby holds the record as the all time leading scorer for the Scottish Under 21 team, with a very impressive 10 goals in 18 international appearances. Hornby also represented the Scotland national team at the under 17 and under 19 level, scoring goals for them as well. So this is a player who has regularly been in the Scottish national team youth set-up for years. So clearly a lot was expected of him and he is still highly rated by many. As a forward, he looks like he has it all. He is strong in the air, he can score with both feet and he is good at scoring from penalty's and free-kicks! He also has an accurate finish and a deft touch for a big man. Moreover, he is good at holding up the ball and providing assist passes for team-mates. He also has very good technique. Obviously the Bundesliga is a step up from the Belgian league, but he performed very well for struggling Oostend last season and Darmstadt will hope he is able to perform just as well for them in the tough season ahead. I could see quite a bit of the potential that you've mentioned here! It can only get better from here on out anyway so will be interesting to see how the whole team develops around him as well. When a club gets promoted usually they keep their players. Germany is different as it seems like all clubs are poached regardless of stature. Players even make sideways moves. Yes, he was always highly rated when he was playing for the Scottish Under 21's. Injuries have somewhat curtailed his progress so far at club level, because he has had an incredible amount of injuries so far in his young career. However, last year he was able to show his quality for a prolonged period of time in the Belgian league. I think that if he can avoid injuries this season, he will be the main attacking outlet for the club for most of the season. He will be the main source of their goals and their attacking play, in a season in which they are bound to struggle, given the competition and strength of the other Bundesliga clubs.
