The Sun might be beginning to enter its next 11-year solar cycle halfway through its current one according to new research. Solar cycles are a measure of the activity of our solar system’s central star. The peak about halfway through a cycle is known as the solar maximum. SETI has teamed up with the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) to use the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in the Australian outback to look for clues of alien intelligence in other galaxies. The study, published in Nature Physics, uses lab-based experiments to suggest that X-rays might be useful for deflecting asteroids up to 4km in diameter.
