Has the Sun risen early on its next solar cycle?Screenshot2024-07-1914_46_40.thumb.png.a368aab1b86bda881c81e07d9a3699c4.png

The Sun might be beginning to enter its next 11-year solar cycle halfway through its current one according to new research.

Solar cycles are a measure of the activity of our solar system’s central star. The peak about halfway through a cycle is known as the solar maximum. We are currently in the solar maximum of Cycle 25 – the 25th since records of solar cycles began in 1755.

Search widens for alien life in galaxies far, far away

Using a telescope in Western Australia, astronomers in the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program are expanding the hunt for aliens to exciting new frontiers.

SETI has teamed up with the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) to use the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in the Australian outback to look for clues of alien intelligence in other galaxies.

In June two American astronauts left Earth expecting to spend eight days on the International Space Station (ISS).

But after fears that their Boeing Starliner spacecraft was unsafe to fly back on, Nasa delayed Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore’s return until 2025.

They are now sharing a space about the size of a six-bedroom house with nine other people.

Supermoon lights up the sky around the world

download.thumb.png.3a7ac37d9b3bee23636cfc785acd258f.png

The first of four full supermoons this year has lit up the night skies around the world.

In some places, the supermoon - also a blue moon - turned red due to smoke from wildfires in North America. Smoke particles mean that light passing through the atmosphere is scattered in such a way that the orange and red colours of the spectrum are more visible than usual.

Blue moons are not that common - it's thought this is where the phrase "once in a blue moon" comes from.

The full moons of September, October - the closest moon this year - and November will also be supermoons.

Mysterious Structures Near Supermassive Black Hole Revealed

Astronomers from NASA have been able to look deeper than ever before into the throat of a quasar powered by an energetic monster black hole with the help Hubble Space Telescope. A quasar is a brightly glowing galactic center that forms when a black hole eats up material in its immediate vicinity.

We have got a few blobs of different sizes and a mysterious L-shaped filamentary structure. This is all within 16,000 light-years of the black hole.
