In other news Peru's government has received praise from abroad but critiques from inside. They are saying that the government is taking good measures to try and stop the coronavirus but with no attempts to stop the current Dengue outbreak that is ongoing. Currently 5500 cases of Dengue in the Amazon regions and 38 cases of Coronavirus. I suspect the efforts focused on the Coronavirus is because he also wants to help stop a global pandemic and not just the domestic issue and also because this is a new virus and we don't know much about it. Dengue isn't a new fever. It's dangerous, but it's not new. This pandemic has more unpredictability to it.

That's better than the rest of the EU countries to be fair. Portugal seems to be doing an alright job. Spain, Italy and France have made a mess of it. I predict the UK will follow hence my message earlier wishing everyone safety.

Excuse the ignorance, what determines the fatality rate? SARS had less than 1000 deaths in the 2003 outbreak and it had a 9.6% chance or mortality. Maybe I'm just really bad at math but an average seems difficult to calculate.

They are at 41 cases and the protests could make things explode there. I think their government has taken good measures unlike Brazil, but their country is out of control at the moment.

My mom's friend and her husband are stuck in Spain at the moment. I know them well and I hope they are OK, but they can't go back to Canada and I'm not sure if they have to keep paying for wherever they stay. As Azeem said, this is just as bad financially as it is medically.

100%. Peru got hit hard by Swine Flu a few years ago, and the Zika outbreak is also in fresh memory. We are also dealing with a Dengue outbreak with over 3000 cases in the Amazon. However, that said I have praised Peru for our immediate reaction to the outbreak as opposed to the other countries, but today things have been a bit worse. 10 new cases and we still haven't banned work yet. Obviously a bit tougher with some of the poorer population not really being able to afford this, but the cases are beginning to rise unsettlingly. We aren't really prepared for a big outbreak. The medical system is terrible and the doctors are untrained for a situation like this, but we are taking good measures to prevent this. From the looks of it, so are India. I have been pleasantly surprised with you having such few cases in a population as big as China and being near it as well. So yeah I agree with everything you said, however then you have Brazil just making a mess of the whole thing.

Not only that but the Venezuelan exodus is still very much ongoing. That could hurt the other countries as well. I can't see Maduro do anything here.
