Subscriber nudge+ Posted December 5, 2021 Subscriber Share Posted December 5, 2021 Worth noting though that the author, Javi Salado, issued an official apology in the newspaper and on his Twitter account and explained that it was not his intention at all - he claims that "the meaning of the vignette was to show that the new strain is the result of the abandonment that we have subjected Africa in terms of vaccines, as has happened in the past with the colonisation, depletion of resources and subsequent abandonment of the continent, which has resulted in a need for immigration. The use of stereotypes has been a tremendous mistake". Given his history of posting vignettes critical of racism and inequality in the past, it does seem like it was an unfortunate mistake with no malicious intent.
