In Turkey he's been well respected, while his reputation in Germany was unfortunately a bit tarnished. Although most people would agree he was an excellent manager, that cocaine affair and specifically that " Ich tue das, weil ich ein reines Gewissen habe.! (translates to "Doing that because I have a clear conscience") quote became part of his public image. On a sidenote his public arguements with Hoeneß were as legendary as those of the latter with Lemke. Michael Posted August 26 Share Posted August 26 This is very sad news, I never realised that he had cancer. Daum was a real character of a manager during his footballing managerial career. Daum was a legend of a manager. Daum won the Bundesliga with VFB Stuttgart as their manager in the 1991/92 season, as Stuttgart finished the season top of the Bundesliga table, level on points with Dortmund, but with a superior goal-difference. Daum was also famous for managing Leverkusen in the late 90's, where they finished 2nd in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich on 3 different occasions, namely during the 1996/97, the 1998/99 and the 1999/2000 Bundesliga seasons. Leverkusen also finished 3rd in the Bundesliga under Daum during the 1997/98 season. Daum managed many clubs during career, both in the Bundesliga, as well as clubs in Europe. Daum even managed the Romanian national team from 2016 to 2017. But as explained by others, Daum became infamously known for that cocaine scandal. However, the fact that he was a favourite to be Germany's manager in the year 2000, just demonstrates how highly rated as a manager he was. R.I.P.
