Administrator Stan Posted October 17, 2019 Administrator Posted October 17, 2019 Villarreal vs Atletico is due to be played in America (Miami's Hard Rock Stadium) on Dec 8th.
Smiley Culture Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 As I said a couple of pages back, I’m apathetic to the idea of it now. It’s been mooted, in the Spanish case for a year or so now and who can forget the fabled “Game 39” that the Premier League wanted to bring in a few years ago? I think eventually a league game of some description will end up being played away from the nation of the teams participating and once that happens a couple of times, it’ll be free rein for other countries *cough* Premier League *cough* to follow suit. I mean, it’s already happening slowly. The Spanish Super Cup and the Italian Super Cup have been or are played abroad and once this little project goes ahead and we have a couple of games abroad, the other major leagues, though less so the Bundesliga, will want in and will want to do the same. Forgetting the product on the field, the commercialisation, bastardisation and globalisation of top level football leaves me cold. There’s part of me that would love to bin it off completely but that’s the thing, these leagues, these competitions, they have you and it’s hard to break from their grasp.
Subscriber Dan+ Posted October 18, 2019 Subscriber Posted October 18, 2019 They're annoyingly very good at gradually implementing these things. They're clever at doing it bit by bit to avoid any mass protests. It'll happen in the Premier League eventually but probably after they've moved the Community Shield to USA or something.
Smiley Culture Posted October 18, 2019 Posted October 18, 2019 That said, I’d likely be a massive hypocrite if I were a fan of a Premier League club if this were to come in over here. If the league applied common sense and announced that [Team Name] would be playing abroad in 2020, I’d likely attempt to save up and go.
