Mpache Posted December 24, 2020 Posted December 24, 2020 I asked @nudge about this earlier but I want opinions. So I'm looking to move to west or north Canada at some point in 2021, and it would be my first personal move. Should I apply for jobs here in Ontario and go with something at hand or should I move there first and then look for it? My preference is not going empty handed, but not all companies are willing to wait or offer accommodations for me to move. I also don't know anything about rentals. The rest I kind of have a plan on, but those are some of my doubts.
DeadLinesman Posted December 24, 2020 Posted December 24, 2020 Some genuine advice. I highly doubt a company are going to offer you accommodation in another city or area when you don’t even have a position with them. I doubt ANY business would do that. They’re not going to hang there hat on an employee they know nothing about and pay for them to move to a new state and provide accommodation as well as salary. I’d say play it safe and get a job first in an area you know before moving away. It took me years to get my job offer in Miami and that’s with having a specialist degree in my field of work.

Yeah regarding your first point, I doubt that as well. I plan to accommodate myself which is why I'm not sure whether to go empty handed or with it. I MUCH prefer to go with a job all ready. I'm just not sure on the process of how it works. Whether I can apply now and they can wait for me to move, or for me to set it all up and then move as soon as I get the job. The 2nd choice seems more realistic. Luckily I am a Canadian citizen so I am allowed to work here. That makes planning significantly easier. Also congrats on moving to Miami, I didn't know you were no longer in the UK.

I'd go one further and suggest that it's extremely arrogant to think that a business would do that.

Had my HB1 visa all sorted an paid for by the company as well. Thank god they were understanding as I’d signed a contract and everything. Could have cost me £50k to pay them back. Maybe in the future.

Like Phil says, it's unlikely a firm/organisation will do this unless you're well known in the industry, come recommended to the organisation from someone already there with a high reputation and happy to wait for your services for what you can provide. If you're able to move and find accommodation and fund that while you find a job then that seems a logical thing to do. Is it easy to find accommodation quickly once you get a job? You don't want to be in a position where you get offered a job, they ask you to start on a certain day, and then you can't because you don't live near enough?

Yeah I'm looking the best way to approach this. I could look for accommodation online from here in Toronto and then get everything set up and then searching for work, or I could do what a lot of people do and stay in a hotel for a bit while I negotiate in person. I know that's what my parents did when we moved to Canada. It's a bit of a mindfuck for me. Basically this job would be anything that I qualify for. Journalism if it's available, or just something that can maintain me. My friend recommended me to work like him for Post Canada, which is a great choice and has several new postings every day. I did some research on the cost of living and it should be enough to maintain me in most of these places.

I think it highly depends on the country and the industry. From personal experience, a lot of companies include acommodation as part of the deal if you are willing to relocate to a different country or city, but that's usually the case if you are a specialist with a set of skills they require urgently.
Subscriber CaaC (John)+ Posted December 24, 2020 Subscriber Posted December 24, 2020 Moved many a time over the years but no big tips, the biggest move my parents did was emigrate to Australia in 1961, we had to be sponsored so our 2 eldest sisters got sponsored in 1959 and headed out to kangaroo land to lay down the foundations for our eventual move (mum, dad, brother and our 4 other sisters) laying the foundations where would we live, get work and save up money for when we landed and get used to the Australian way of life. Before we moved my mum & dad bought some crates, 5 I think it was and packed all our essential stuff to be shipped ahead and arrive before we landed and we left with just suitcases. I can remember all lying on the lounge floor with just a radio on and blankets for the night, the excitement building up in us as we were all going on a 6-week journey on a ship across the sea, the morning jumping into a taxi and heading off to Tilbury Docks and boarding the SS Himalaya and starting the 6 weeks journey. We eventually arrived where our eldest sisters had obtained a house, money in the bank and managed to find my old man a job, then teaching us the Australian way of life, two years of life in my time and that move helped me out as a married man when we moved around over the years.
