One of my good friends here who’s been so good about staying inside and away from people was feeling pretty sick for a few days, then noticed he lost his sense of taste so he got tested. Tested positive. He lives in a big tower of flats, so while he stays inside as much as he can he has to go to communal areas to do things like get his mail and to get food. He thinks he must have gotten it at a supermarket. Pretty shit though to follow guidance as much as possible and still get it. Hope he has a speedy recovery. I’m a bit worried because he’s a pretty heavy smoker (of cigarettes) and we know this attacks the lungs. He says he’s not feeling too bad, he just misses tasting food.

With the Beirut explosion, it’s now being confirmed as one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions ever. Similar incidents took a lot more lives, and this would have been more devastating if it were normal times. Covid saved lives here, weirdly. The port was less packed than normal and as a result some buildings that were empty or almost empty and that saved their lives. Obviously still very tragic for everyone who died as a result of the explosion. And with thousands injured, it clearly was still very devasting.

To me it looks like fireworks (or ammo) that’s burning/exploding over a shitload of explosives. I’m no expert, but I’ve seen a shitload of fireworks explode all at once on accident. And it looked fuck all like that massive explosion.

@Azeem, have you heard any specific details about the big Iran-China trade deal? Iranian nationalists, both in Iran and abroad, seem to hate it. It’s weirdly put some people that hate Ahmadinejad using his vocal criticism of the deal as their own words. Pragmatically though, does Iran really have any choice but to enter into a deal with China? They can’t really turn to the US or EU (especially not now), and the parts of Asia that rely heavily on trading with the west - South Korea’s absolutely fucked them too by refusing to pay for $7b worth of oil they imported... so Russia and China are all they have left to turn to... and China’s the superpower not Russia. But these big trade deals with China tend to mean ceding a lot of influence and control of their country to Beijing. For a country that’s had terrible experiences with foreign meddling and for a regime that’s held the position that foreign influence should get the fuck out of Iran since 1979... it’s a pretty controversial topic.
