Watching NBCSN football streams has given me a taste of life in America...I thought the "these are real people, not actors, OMG CHEVY" adverts were annoying (I actually mute the TV every time they come on), but I've just seen the exact same Verizon advert four times in one commercial break...and probably about 15 times so far today.

I think Azeem is right in that a beating at school is nowhere near the worst thing he's lived through in his life. He's old enough to know about what's happening in his country...and has probably had to leave Syria because of it. He looks to have become numb to suffering.
