I think a lot of foods are definitely an acquired taste... There are plenty of things I disliked as a kid, but have grown to love throughout the years.
I don't get how people can say they hate mushrooms in general though, considering that mushrooms vary in flavour, smell and texture extremely, and the taste is also highly affected by the cooking method. You can't even compare a champignon with a chanterelle or a porcini, nevermind the rest of edible mushroom sorts.
Seafood I love too... Fish, prawns, mussels, crab, lobster, caviar, oysters, scallops, clams... just give me anything. But a lot of it is an acquired taste or even a cultural thing. Don't think a lot of people would love brined herring straight from a cask, but I think it's amazing
