On the face of it,  it looks like the season is ticking along normally with no real surprises,  Arsenal are top because they are the consensus best team and wolves at the bottom because they are per consensus the worst team in the league.   Going into expected points per game shows that this season has a few black sheeps  hidden in the flock.

Just now, Stan said:

How were Brighton 'expected' to have more points than they already do?

Expected Points indicates how many points a team could have Expected to have taken from a game, based on the scoring opportunities that they both created and conceded in that game

Mind you, they probably bagged a shit load of XG against us, even though they scored 5 anyway.

They lost out on points at Anfield when they were by far the better team,  they also deserved to pummel Nottingham a few weeks ago,  they had like 40 shots and 17 were on target,  the goal posts and Henderson were having a day.

5/10.

Chuffed to beat Chelsea and Liverpool but equally we failed to beat Fulham, a sub par Everton, a drab Villa at home as well as losing to a poor Leicester and chucking a 2 goal lead away at an inept Southampton. Even Spurs last week should have been walking away with at least a draw, arguably at Palace too.

We should definitely be higher in the table and have at least 5 more points that would put us smack bang midtable but we waste too many chances and concede too easily. It's not often we shithouse/rob games we shouldn't win.

We're actually one point less over the same amount of games than last season so there's plenty of work for us to do and the competition in the final third of the league looks far tighter than last year so its gonna be a long season at this rate.

Worst start I've ever seen from us followed by probably the best run we've had in about two years. Still below where this squad is truly capable of but given it's come in the order it has done I don't think people have any major concerns now. Stars are aligning for a good Carabao Cup run too - I'll be disappointed if we don't get to the semi finals.

i will say that this season has surpassed all my expectations, pretty hard to really think how things could be better.   the only disappointments were back to back draws against Palace and Bournemouth where we dominated everything but the scoreline but that's how it goes.
