Scunthorpe seem to be splashing the cash a bit in National League North. Just signed former Notts County player Callum Roberts from Aberdeen.

They need to be careful because if they don't get promoted this season, it'll likely be bad news for them!

Southend United have been docked 10 points by the National League following a High Court decision to grant a final 42-day deadline to the club to avoid being wound up.

Owner Ron Martin said the sale of the club to an unnamed Australian buyer should be finalised next month.

But they have yet to clear a £275,000 debt owed to HM Revenue & Customs.

The deduction means Southend go bottom of the table on minus four points, but they are expected to appeal.

The financially-troubled Shrimpers were given a 42-day adjournment at their previous appearance in court on 12 July to clear their debt to HMRC and find a new owner.

In court on Wednesday, the judge warned Martin that the club, founded in 1906, would be wound up if the new deadline of 4 October was missed.

"If this was not a football club, with the attachment of its fans, I would be winding it up today," Judge Sebastian Prentis said. "This has got to be sorted out".

Southend, who have total debts of £2.5m, were warned by the National League last month that failure to clear their tax liability before Wednesday's hearing would result in a 10-points deduction - irrespective of whether their case was adjourned for a third time.

"The League made the club aware on 26 July 2023 that all outstanding debt to HMRC should be discharged in full by their court hearing on 23 August 2023," the National League said in a statement.

"The League are now aware of the court hearing adjournment and that outstanding debt to HMRC has not been discharged in full.

"As a result, Southend United Football Club have been deducted 10 points with immediate effect."

In a statement written prior to the National League announcement, Southend said they would "immediately pursue an appeal" against any points deduction.

On the sale of the club, a statement said: "Negotiations are at an advanced stage with a consortium led by an Australian national, and comprising of a group of local businessmen. Completion is targeted before 1 October."

After settling football-related debts of £300,000 last month to ensure they could start the season, Southend began the campaign with two wins and two defeats, which left them in ninth place with six points.

But the 10-point penalty leaves them five points adrift of previous bottom club Dagenham & Redbridge.

Conservative MP for Southend West, Anna Firth, said she shared the fans' "immense disappointment that this saga has again be extended for 42 days" but was treating Martin's confidence over the pending sale of the club "with optimism".

She continued: "I am aware of the potential buyer and have had several conversations with him and believe they are committed to the purchase and have the club's best interest at heart."

That, and a text conversation where he (if it is him) saying he 'doesn't care what the spastic fans think' and that he won't be giving the club another penny, and that it can die for all he cares.

A lot going on with them for a while now. Promised that he would come in and revitalise the club but he hasn't done that. If anything, he's going to sell up and leave them in an even worse position IF they don't fold first. Really sad to see.

Now that the regular challengers of Forest Green, Stockport, Wrexham and Notts County have left Non-League in recent seasons, this is Chesterfield's big chance.

It's a weaker division now I'd say and I will be really surprised if they fail to go up in first under Paul Cook.

7 straight wins now, looking ominous. Gateshead are looking decent too, possible dark horse through the playoffs if they carry on playing the Football they have been.

Owner not giving any more money to the club, they have said they're not playing any more games at Glanford Park and will play at Gainsborough - and now Gainsborough have said they weren't even aware of it. It's such a fuck up by all involved and their fans must be going through hell right now.

Promising news for Southend

Quote

Southend United have agreed a takeover deal with a consortium headed by Australian businessman Justin Rees.

The deal has been announced less than 24 hours before the club are due in the High Court to face an HM Revenue & Customs winding-up petition.

Southend told the BBC, however, that the HMRC debt has now been paid.

The takeover will end the 25-year tenure of Ron Martin, who announced in March he was looking to sell the National League club.

A statement said: "We can confirm that an agreement for the sale of the club has been reached with a consortium led by Justin Rees.

"Everyone is working towards a completion date of 1 November 2023 - that is when the consortium will formally take control of the club.

"The collaborative approach to agreeing this deal would not have been possible without the support of creditors and the assistance from the leader of Southend City Council.

"We recognise that this has been a stressful time for all associated with the club. We would like to thank our staff for their incredible loyalty and also thank all our stakeholders for their patience."

The winding-up petition was adjourned on 23 August to give Martin more time to complete the sale.

"If this was not a football club, with the attachment of its fans, I would be winding it up today," Judge Sebastian Prentis said at the time.

Southend were docked 10 points by the National League for failing to clear their debts, which total £2.5m, and an appeal against that penalty was rejected last week.

What entry requirement did they fail?

Stadium?

Council would back their tenure bid, which EFL supposedly need. Guessing stadium was fine but perhaps stability needed?

Haringey Borough season ticket renewed. It's cost me the grand total of...£0.00. I've not robbed them or lost a quiz and got the booby prize, that's just how much they cost. Why wouldn't you want one? Sixty-one goals scored last season, albeit forty-nine were conceded by Boro', the only club actually on White Hart Lane, their own lager and a 3G pitch so it's almost never called off.

As I’ve mentioned up thread, I have a Haringey Borough season ticket. They’re in the eighth tier of English Football, in the Isthmian Division One North, after relegation from the Isthmian Premier last season. Their season kicked off last week and it started much how last season went, with defeat. Basildon United were the hosts and won 1-0. I didn’t go, so no idea how it even went.

Today is FA Cup day. Some eighty-ish days since Manchester United won the final at Wembley, the competition is in its second round, the Preliminary Round. Boro’ have Benfleet away, two divisions below them. Prize money for going through is £1,444 with a guarantee of £750 in the next week, rising to £2,250 should they win that game. That sort of money, whilst not even enough to pay a Premier League players wage to have a pee is vital to clubs at that sort of level.

Think it will be September now before I get to a game over there.

Proper non-league....

Yeovil Town FC has made spelling mistakes on the packaging of some of its merchandise.

The packaging of the football club's scarves reads "Yeovl" without the i, and has misspelt the word merchandise without an "r".

The scarves cost £16 and some fans of the recently promoted National League team said it was "a scam". However, the scarves themselves had no spelling errors.

Yeovil Town told BBC Radio Somerset: "Human error is natural; we're not robots."

BBC Radio Somerset spoke to some fans in Yeovil, who felt it did not represent the club "properly".

"That is really sad, the fact they can't spell their own town right," one fan said.

"Quite misleading, for the town that supports them and has grown fond of the club."
