nudge Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 McLaren seem to be doing great as Norris finishes in P5 ahead of Max in P6 while Sainz beats Gasly to P7 Hope they can keep it up for the race as well. Hamilton summoned to the stewards for an investigation for rejoining the track in an unsafe manner and impeding Verstappen

Ferrari: we have overwhelming proof Vettel didn't break the rules when he rejoined the track. FIA: there are no significant and relevant new elements which were unavailable to the parties at the time of the competition concerned. Glad this nonsense is finally over.
MUFC Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 So Sky sports F1 was apart of the evidence Ferrari handed in.
Moderator Tommy Posted June 22, 2019 Moderator Posted June 22, 2019 So what was going on with Seb? Gear box issues?
nudge Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Amazing by McLaren! Happy for them but let's see how their race pace looks tomorrow. Still, that's a stellar performance by them today. Lewis getting the job done when it matters; Bottas disappointing in Q3. Mercedes still miles ahead of everyone. Ferrari... Oh well. Leclerc looked OK but the gap is still too big. Vettel fucked up. He'll not have it easy with Max and both McLarens ahead of him tomorrow given that both teams seem to be able to keep up with them on this track. Gio making it to Q3 is nice, but he'll have the disadvantage of starting on softs as a result.
Moderator Tommy Posted June 23, 2019 Moderator Posted June 23, 2019 Will Buxton has been kissing Lewis' arse all week.
nudge Posted June 23, 2019 Posted June 23, 2019 Come on Sauber, come on Max! Hope McLaren do well too.
nudge Posted June 23, 2019 Posted June 23, 2019 Great start by Sainz and he's done well to try and overtake Max in the beginning as he knows McLaren can't keep up with RB on long runs. Seems Max had trouble with acceleration while exiting corners but his lead over Sainz is growing and he also got the fastest lap in the meantime so hopefully all is good...
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted June 23, 2019 Subscriber Posted June 23, 2019 Russell and Kubica fighting to the death over 19th . Vettel has passed both Mclarens now so there's your action for this afternoon pretty much done.
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted June 23, 2019 Subscriber Posted June 23, 2019 The state of this sport these days, honestly. After the first lap I wanted to switch off and watch something else and I'm a huge fan of F1. I keep watching out of pure loyalty and not much else. Difficult to think of a more predictable and monotonous sport than this. Every week a total procession with rare exceptions.

I watch a shitload of racing; various open wheel single seaters, junior series, GT/sportcars, touring cars, motorbikes, rally, you name it. Pretty much all of it is much more entertaining racing-wise than F1 and like you, I only keep on watching because I've been a fan for years. Just finished watching 24 Hours of Nürburgring and I was glued to the screen throughout it all (except 4 hours sleep). Same with Le Mans last weekend even if it was one of the poorest ones in recent years (still more actual on track action than F1). Indy 500 a few weeks back was incredible and kept me on the edge of my seat until the checkered flag. Just a few examples. I honestly don't know why I'm wasting my time every (second) weekend this borefest though. I know I will keep on watching nevertheless.

I didn't watch the 2000-2004 Schumacher era but I've seen enough replays to see that even when the title was a washout, the races were decent, cars broke down, drivers made mistakes, refuelling made for some strategy-related intrigue. The 2011 and 2013 Vettel championships were on a par with the dull Mercedes dominance but at least 2010 and 2012 were good years. The only years that have been vaguely decent since Mercedes took over in 2014 were the Hamilton v Rosberg season and the first half of last year. The problem with this year is that Bottas is on a par with Rosberg in the seasons where he didn't win the title and Mercedes gap this year is as comfortable as it has ever been. Says it all that the most interesting parts of this race since the opening laps have been the pit battle between Raikkonen and Hulkenberg over 9th and the Toro Rossos racing each other for 14th.
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted June 23, 2019 Subscriber Posted June 23, 2019 Some nice action between Norris, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Hulkenberg at the end. No doubt the stewards will render it pointless though by hammering a couple of them with random penalties.

For me it's absolutely the worst era. As I said somewhere else before, I don't really even mind one team dominating; it's been pretty much the case throughout the history of F1. The difference though, as you said, is that in the 90s and early 2000s it was still entertaining due to numerous reasons - for me the biggest difference (including everything else you mentioned already) is probably the fact that the cars were much simpler and the driver had much more control and there were less regulations. Don't get me wrong - I love technical progress and innovation and I'm always very excited to see new engineering solutions to make a car as fast as possible, but it shouldn't come at the expense of actual racing and driver skills. Maybe it's just me, but the whole idea that a driver now has to ask his garage to give him more power or has to receive extensive instructions on what mode to turn on/off and how to press certain buttons on the steering wheel in certain order to get the car working best is just completely ridiculous. It seems they regulated the racing part away from the race.

He seemed to leave the track twice while trying to overtake Lando and then Kimi...
nudge Posted June 23, 2019 Posted June 23, 2019 Double penalty of 5 seconds for Ricciardo. One for leaving the track, rejoining unsafely and forcing another driver off the track (Lando). The other one for getting off track and gaining an advantage (Kimi). With this Ricciardo falls from P7 to P11.
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted June 23, 2019 Subscriber Posted June 23, 2019 Fair enough on these penalties if you want to be consistent, but if people are going to start getting penalty points for this stuff that's going a bit far. Penalty points should be reserved for dangerous maneuvres and consistently ruining other people's races. Taking a gamble by pushing the limits of the rules without endangering a rival shouldn't result in penalty points.
