Van Dijk was his usual flawless self for much of the season after a bit of a settling in period early in the season (probably still better than any CB in the league during this period anyway) Rudiger was great for Chelsea as well. Just my opinion. I honestly thought Matip was great last season.

Matip is rotated with Konate throughout the season whereas Van Dijk is probably the first name on the team sheet after Alisson. Matip had a great season but I think you're going OTT.

Matip played nearly all the Premier league games and was rotated for CL I think. Of course VVD is the first name on the team sheet because he's the best CB in the world but that doesn't mean Matip didn't have a better season overall. VVD was again sound last season but on a few occasions he got caught out of position and wasn't his usual self in very few games admittedly. Matip though had a solid Premier league campaign. As I said, it's debatable in my eyes. Both were brilliant.
Cicero Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Rudiger had a Terry esq season both domestically and in Europe, hence why he's rightfully in both. I do like Matip though.

Tbh I think Matip was our best defender in the league this season. Which is really saying something because Virgil also had a great season and Konate looked really good when he played too. Shit like this is why I don’t take these team of the year things too seriously. Like I don’t see how you can reasonably leave out any of: Matip, Laporte, Virgil or Rudiger… but 2 of them have to get left out. But they all had pretty great seasons at CB. And then it sort of becomes a bit of a popularity contest. Like why isn’t Son in the side? Oh cos Ronaldo is. And I think that’s even sillier. Not worth anyones time or energy getting upset by it, really. It’s picked by players who are mostly gonna be basing it off their experiences rather than over a whole season, they vote tactically too because… egos and shit like that.
LFCMike Posted June 11, 2022 Posted June 11, 2022 I can't agree because I think Van Dijk basically makes our defence. The rest wouldn't be able to play how they do without him and he was basically what he was pre injury for most of the season

Anyway....
Subscriber RandoEFC+ Posted June 11, 2022 Subscriber Posted June 11, 2022 Finished 2nd, but got twice as many players in this than the actual champions, and it's still not enough. Can't you lot just have one day off?
