I only saw the results and a few clips here and there because I was at Fortuna, but what a lap from Georgy boy. 1.3 Seconds faster than Kubica. The Polish fans must be running out of excuses :ph34r:

Grosjean, lol. That is an interesting graphic though. The Red Bull is fastest there in all of the major braking zones, and under traction as well, which points to a very driveable engine and good mechanical grip. It's odd as Red Bull and Adrian Newey's cars in general are best known for high speed cornering and downforce.

Ferrari clearly have a slight edge in the high speed stuff and straight line speed, but they must be lacking a lot in those low speed and traction areas. Throughout Q3, there was nothing between the top 3 cars in the first two sectors, then Max was finding 0.3-0.4s over the Ferraris in that final sector, with Mercedes somewhere in between.

It's an informative graphic anyway, hopefully we see similar at other races as it really shows the strengths and weaknesses of each car. With good performances now in Austria, Germany and Hungary, a decent mix of circuits, we can start to say that Red Bull have taken a significant grip on the development race and we could see them competing for most of the remaining races apart from probably Spa and Mexico.

Going back to Haas, one thing we haven't mentioned is how Grosjean was on the old specification car and made it into Q3 while Magnussen was bottom of Q2 in the newer version of the car. This is an absolute nightmare for the team because it means not only that the upgrade didn't work, but that whatever data they're getting in the factory to inform their development is somehow unreliable. Yet again, Haas have some pace in that car, but don't seem to be able to figure the thing out and unlock that pace consistently.

I think tomorrow we'll see Verstappen take a lights to flag win, Hamilton to get past Bottas at the start and finish 2nd while Valtteri ends up scrapping with the Ferraris. If the McLarens get away well I don't see why they can't finish where they start, I fancy one of them to get Gasly off the start and frustrate him for much of the race before he eventually gets through. Grosjean will probably struggle for race pace and cause a big train, eventually slipping back way out of the points. I'll be interested to see if Russell can compete with the Racing Points, Haas and Toro Rossos in race trim as well. Ricciardo is in for a frustrating race and I expect one of the two Renaults to go pop again tomorrow.

It's also interesting how Mercedes were expected by everyone to still be the best in slow-speed corners (although that somewhat ironically used to be their weak point in the recent past) but that's actually where Max gained the most on them in the quali today. They still lack a lot on the straights and also are a bit behind on high speed corners; as you said Ferrari rule those but then they lose massively on slow and even medium speed corners.

Also just for the purpose of visualisation, it's really surprising how much Red Bull improved in slow speed corners in just a week. They were still 0.2s there behind Mercedes in Germany so managed to gain 0.4s in total (based on today's quali). Other gaps to Mercedes decreased as well but not as significantly. Straight line speed deficit as compared to Ferrari seems to have been reduced as well and it will be interesting to see what Honda's spec 4 brings in terms of this after the mid-season break.

A few sticky pit stops in there but good work by Red Bull to get Gasly ahead of Norris and Kimi. Lando has lost two places there but is looking punchy on fresh tyres.

Bottas finally passes Ricciardo but he's taken so long that now he will have to pass Norris, Raikkonen, Gasly, Sainz on track if he wants to beat them, as they've all pitted and come out ahead of him.

Vettel going long, looks like they may try a Medium-Soft strategy and hope for a late safety car to give him a chance of sneaking a result.

Hamilton already catching Max super quick. Looks like a role reversal from Monaco now.

Ah, he hadn't stopped.

Hamilton attacking Max now. Perez unhelpful to both drivers there while being lapped.

Max won't stop again now. Looks like Lewis will be there with 3 laps or so left.

Vettel is catching Leclerc on the alternate strategy, brace yourselves for Ferrari anti-Leclerc conspiracy theories this evening.

Vettel nicks 3rd from his team mate as well. Gasly didn't trouble Sainz for 5th despite being in the DRS zone for much of the race, he really should have had a lunge. Bottas disappointing as well, put his team mate in his circumstances and he would have scythed back through to 5th place.

Back to Sainz, back to back 5th places and without any doubt the star of the midfield this year. He started with Toro Rosso in F1 but left the Red Bull system as Ricciardo and Verstappen seemed to have the senior seats locked down for the foreseeable future. He's already signed up with McLaren for next year, I bet Red Bull and possibly Sainz himself are wondering what might have been there. 

Hamilton showed every element today of why he's an all time great. Attacked Max when they were both on hard tyres instead of accepting 2nd and complaining that you cant overtake at this track like most drivers would, made the alternate strategy work, red hot out lap to squash Red Bull's chance to mirror the Mercedes strategy without surrendering the lead, and a clinical overtake at the first attempt. Verstappen was unlucky today, Mercedes were just in the position to take a gamble because they had a faster car and one way or another were going to get through. Another example of why they've dominated for years now.

Back to the drawing board for Ferrari, they were closer throughout the race to Sainz behind them as they were to the leaders. More difficulty also for Renault, Haas and Racing Point whose pace is absolutely nowhere this year. I think Russell ended up staying ahead of Giovinazzi and Stroll in the end, more on track position than pace but still a step forward.

What a fucking strategy call by Mercedes, and of course an excellent drive from Lewis. 

 

Ferrari were embarrassing. A few more laps, and they would have been lapped as well xD But I'm happy that Seb managed to get on the podium.
