Administrator Stan Posted November 19, 2019 Administrator Posted November 19, 2019 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50471015 Quote Luis Enrique, whose daughter died from bone cancer in August, is returning as Spain manager five months after stepping down for personal reasons. Enrique resigned in June after 11 months in the job and announced in August that his nine-year-old daughter, Xana, had died. The 49-year-old former Barcelona boss was replaced by his assistant, Robert Moreno. Moreno was in charge as Spain beat Romania 5-0 on Monday. It saw Spain wrap up qualification for Euro 2020 without losing a game. Moreno, who also worked under Enrique at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona, said after taking the job he would "step aside" if Enrique ever wanted to return. At a news conference on Tuesday, Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales said: "Everyone knew that if Luis Enrique wanted to come back he had the doors open. "Luis Enrique will continue to the Qatar World Cup [in 2022]." Enrique was appointed national team boss following Spain's exit from the 2018 World Cup in the last 16. He was in charge for the Nations League, where Spain failed to reach the semi-finals, and remained in place for the beginning of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign. The Spaniard travelled back home for personal reasons before Spain's 2-0 victory in Malta in March and Moreno was placed in temporary charge. Enrique then stepped down three months later.

The Artful Dodger Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50576250 Obviously only got small details but this seems an incredibly harsh judgment from Enrique.

Harsh maybe, but it was bang out of order for Moreno to make a big fuss out of being removed as head coach - if you're a relative nobody and you get a huge job because the previous guy's daughter dies, you've obviously not earned the position in the normal sense, even if he did end up doing a good job. If he had done the decent thing when Enrique said he was ready to return, and said "I'm gutted, but I'll get over it and go back to my old job now", he'd be fine right now.

That isn't what happened here, what was reported by Alvaro Romeo who was close to the camp was that when Enrique stepped down Moreno was to be made manager in the interim. When Enrique was ready to return, Moreno would stay on as assistant. This was agreed up front with the federation, Enrique and Moreno. However, Enrique didn't like what he was hearing coming out the dressing room and indeed some of the approaches Moreno was taking, so he told the federation he was reneging on the agreement and did not want Romeo. It's why he was so upset, it's why likewise the players were too but why it's also been so misunderstood and misreported. The simple truth here is that while Luis Enrique was away, he decided he didn't want to work with Moreno and that was that.

Some of the actual quotes from Enrique seem to imply there was more to it than that don't they?

Sadly so, Luis Enrique just didn't want him around and seemed to have no issue being quite blunt about it
