I think it wasn't reviewed kindly because most people these days do not have the appetite or the attention span required for movies like that - multiple storylines and subplots with a lot of characters that seem to be unrelated to each other (although I am pretty sure they will converge in the future). It is beautifully shot, the landscapes are breathtaking. The casting is spot on, the characters are great, and the storylines are all interesting, and all show a different side of things and events, with multiple perspectives and points of view. The scope is really ambitious, and it almost feels like "a slice of life" kind of movie, with all these people and their tragedies being just a tiny speck in unfolding events. Despite all that, to me it didn't feel convoluted at all; I thought it was powerful, easy to follow, and I wasn't bored for a single moment. Probably my favourite Westerns of all time. Really looking forward to Chapter 2, which seems to be getting much better reviews after the screening!
