Is there a 'World Cup' of Cricket? If so, when is it?

I'm sure I can find it on tv, but it would probably need to be a major tournament for it to be on over here.

Yes ! inaugural tournament was in 1975. The next one is in 2019 during summer to be held in England & Wales.

Australia has most titles with five trophies to their name, others winners include India,West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Nice.

So the big players are who? India, West Indies, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England? Any other countries that are good?

Money wise, I believe India is the biggest board, there is too much power in Indian board's hands and they are partial reason for ruining cricket in my opinion.

If you are talking historically then Australia and West Indies (Caribbean Islands) are the biggest teams. But recently WI are not that great overall so the top teams would be more or less in this order Australia, India, South Africa, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc.

There is no channel that telecasts cricket in the states, ESPN app shows some odd games every now and then but you can find most of the matches on willow TV which is a paid subscription and you can stream them on your smart tv or laptop.

Speaking of the World Cup, what's everyone's thought on the new world cup format ?

While its harsh on smaller teams and isn't good for the growth of the game either but i like the league format as its more competitive and gives more reasonable games to watch.

I highly doubt this format won't stay for longer either.

Is it too much to ask for a brief overview of Old Format vs New?

Older format had 14 teams with two groups of seven with top four going in the quater final from each group. Group stages didn't had much excitement because there were two useless games. It was like having Germany,Brazil, Spain and Luxembourg in a group and top three going through.

So they cut down to 10 teams, with all teams playing each other like in a league and top four going in the semis. Good entertainment wise but harsh on smaller teams that won't get much chance on world stage.

So right now you'd have India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies, and Zimbabwe split into 2 groups?

Nope. All ten will play each other, round robin.

I guess I'll need to pick me a country and start watching since us Americans don't seem to have a team or one good enough to really compete.

America had a team and it participated in some events but international cricket council shut it down as the governing body wasn't doing seroius effort for the game, a new governing body is set to take place in 2018 so the team might get back

Speaking of American cricket team, they had the US team on the EA cricket 2007 and there was their opening fast medium bowler and the swing he had  every time i would go for an aggresive shot i edged it and gone to the keeper.

I could smash Bret lee and Mcgrath for six sixes but i always went with singles against him xD

You're welcome to support India. Think of it as a trade. I take an interest in Atlanta FC mainly because of your presence on here a couple of years ago (and they're a good team to watch). :D

Bowlers - there's various types of bowlers. Fast. Medium. Spinner. They're the main ones. You can get a medium-fast bowler who is in between the first two. Then you have off-spin and leg-spin - two different types of spin; different bowlers can make the ball spin different ways. You get specialists in each type of bowling.

Fast bowlers usually try to 'swing' the ball. That means instead of just bowling just straight all the time, they can make the ball swing; they can alter the natural direction of the ball with the way they bowl it and shape it in their hands/fingers and when they release the ball - think like baseball where the pitcher can curve it or change the way it moves towards the batsman).

Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath were seriously fast bowlers for Australia. Notoriously hard to bat against because of their pace.

Who? O.o

Yeah - I'll probably take up India. It helps that I play tennis against a bunch of Indians, and have become good enough friends with them that asking them to teach me the sport or get together to watch their cricket team wouldn't seem too unnatural. xD

haha Atlanta United. Soz :D!

Good man. There's different formats of cricket and the most popular in the modern times is the 50-over format or Twenty20 (T20) format. They bring in the most entertainment you could say. T20 is by far the most extravagant and entertaining. Not all players play the same format though!

Serious but odd question. Do your parents speak Hindi, Bengali, or both?

Gujarati, which is close to Hindi. Gujarat is a state on Western coast of India.

I'm pretty sure that's what my tennis partner and his family speak. However, they also speak Hindi when they encounter other Indians.

Scotland stun England as Calum MacLeod hits 140 not out in Edinburgh

Scotland secured the biggest win in their cricketing history with a thrilling six-run defeat of England.

Callum MacLeod's brilliant 140 not out took the home side to 371-5 in glorious batting conditions in Edinburgh.

Jonny Bairstow's 54-ball century looked to have England on course until they slipped from 220-2 to 276-7.

Liam Plunkett (47 not out) and Moeen Ali (46) kept them in it, but last man Mark Wood was lbw to Safyaan Sharif from the fifth ball of the 49th over.

It is a wonderful result for Scotland, who have been improving steadily since the 2015 World Cup and were only denied a place in the 2019 tournament when rain stopped their match against West Indies in the qualifying tournament in March.

Here, against the number one ranked side in the world, the Scots gave the sort of performance that further questions the International Cricket Council's decision to cut the World Cup to only 10 teams.

For England, so impressive in limited-overs cricket in recent years, this first defeat by Scotland can be mentioned in the same breath as the Twenty20 humblings by the Netherlands, and World Cup losses to Ireland and Bangladesh.

They must regroup for the five-match series against Australia, which begins at The Oval on Wednesday, while Scotland move on to T20s against Pakistan on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Beating the no 1 ODI side then possibly winning against no 1 T20 side :Scotland:

Yeah, sport still doesn't make sense to me.

I see this on the scoreboard - Pakistan 181/3 (18.2 ov) , does that mean they are winning 181 -3 ?xD
