According to media reports in Spain, Barcelona is set to terminate Demir's loan, as they are not willing to pay the agreed 10 million release clause for Rapid Wien. Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt are reportedly interested in signing him in January.

If those reports are true, then it's beyond pathetic. A club with a squad worth 600+ million trying to avoid paying 10 million for a promising young player to a club with at least 20 times lower market value, and which heavily relies on developing and nurturing talents to secure their existence and future. If you don't want to pay, just terminate the loan instead of pressuring the other club and threatening to bench the player because one more match performance would trigger the purchase clause. What a joke.

It's a disgrace really.

One of the truly giant clubs in the world is taking it out on a club that relies on developing talents & selling them to survive. And also threatening to bench the player for the rest of the season, which will hamper his development is just punishing a young player for Barcelona's own poor financial planning. If they can't afford him under the terms they previously negotiated... they should let him go back to the club that actually owns him. Particularly if they managed to negotiate that Rapid Vienna can't call him back from the loan.

It's also the exact wrong sort of move for Barcelona as they try to navigate through their financial woes - they'll need to work with teams that sign these young talents, are willing to allow them to go on loan and potentially sign for Barcelona at what are probably favourable prices compared to the open market. It's a pipeline for them to get quality young players with huge potential without having to spend the big bucks that got them in the situation they are in.

But you treat clubs like Rapid Vienna like this over not wanting to pay this fee... and clubs like Rapid Vienna are not going to pick up the phone the next time Barcelona come calling. Instead Barca seem like the type of club who'll call after making a move like this and try to negotiate a lower price for Demir because "he's barely played all last season" in the summer after they made the decision to barely play him to avoid paying him.

Barcelona are basically the footballing equivalent of a billionaire who gets a kick out of tormenting any regular working-class people they come across in their day to day life.

It's a shame Bartomeu wasn't able to hang in there long enough to get the club liquidated.

The problem with Demir is that he hasn't shown much, despise having obvious talent, whereas other young players are playing to a very consistent level, which is actually scary for their ages. Fati(hopefully his knee hasn't killed his career) makes the team 3 times better when he plays, Pedri, before being burnt out, which led to injury, was the team's stand out performer and now Gavi and Nico are shining in midfield.

Gavi is arguably the most talented and he never has a bad game. I can't believe he's only 17. He's unreal for his age. Already in Luis Enrique's starting 11 for Spain as well.

There has also been the emergence of Abde from the youth, who plays in Demir's position. He doesn't give me the impression that he's as talented as the players mentioned above(although, who knows? He's only 20), as they are already key players, even for Spain. But he's showing alot more than Demir has thus far and looks like he can create alot of danger with his pace. This then starts making it difficult for Demir to find the minutes and that's not ideal for his progression on the future. 

Now the club are spending 50 million on Ferrán Torres, who himself is still very young at 21, but is more ready made. Spending and additional 10 million on a young player who hasn't been able to make his mark yet is tío risky given the financial problems.

I'd say under general circumstances it would be worth buying him for 10 million, as the talent is there and young players need time, especially when coming from abroad(all the stand outs came from La Masia, or another Spanish club) but given the financial problems, money needs to be spent more wisely now. For this I think him going to Germany would be the best bet for his career as it stands. Hopefully it works out well for the kid.

What I don't get is why there is talk of Dest being sold. He's not as consistent as the likes of Fati(when he's fit!), Pedri, Gavi and Araújo, but you can see his talent and he put on some class performances last season, especially the away game against Real Sociedad. He should be given time and patience as I don't see any better young right backs at the club.

But Gavi though! Already a beast and has that leadership quality in him on top of his talent, you can sense it in him. Araújo is also a beast of a defender.

The big worry is Fati's knee, hopefully he grows through it because when he plays the team literally look 5 times better, even at his age and he's got it all to be the future of the sport. Add Gavi and Pedri and that is some talent, not just for the future but present.

I'd like to see more from Ter Stegen and de Jong. Ter Stegen's been poor for a few seasons now and de Jong hasn't been himself since Messi left, but those 2 and Depay should be key players right now and only really Depay has impressed out of the 3 this term. Injuries have been the biggest issue. A bunch of players always out at the same time.

@Carnivore Chris the issue was not Barcelona not buying him or him not getting much playing time; after all, he was originally planned for the B-team anyway, and he agreed to it because playing for Barcelona was always his dream. It's how Barcelona tried to pressure Rapid into dropping the purchase clause that's the problem. But it seems it's over now anyway, and Demir will be back to Wien and then probably go to Germany. It's for the best, as what he needs is regular playing time to keep developing.
