I'm sure we looked at him, but he was never a real target for the club. They got jilted by their true target and settled on getting Slot based on how well he was doing at the time.

I honestly think we’re better off with Slot than the first choice Xabi or anyone who’s preferred defensive setup is 3 at the back.

Aside from that kind of setup not really fitting the squad that was left behind… how many squads have won anything in England with 3 at the back? Just Chelsea right?

Was Alonso ever first choice? I know it seemed obvious to most of us at the time that he would be but I'm not convinced that he would have been for Edwards or Hughes. Not that it matters one bit now like haha.

Think it was reported we reached out to him first but then he signed his extension with Leverkusen.

Glad we got Slot in the end. I am still pretty concerned with Hughes as DOF though. I think this summer will really be where he needs to prove himself as I think we're going to have massive gaps in the squad that need filling. And signing an injury prone winger and a 3rd choice keeper in his first summer don't really fill me with confidence for his future dealings.

I wouldn't be too gutted. The man is rejuvenated. He wants to win the league and honestly its refreshing to hear someone say "im not worried about the contracts because I want to look back and say I had a good season". I think his loss will hit me after hes gone vs watching him be the best version of himself now. The club have had their chance and honestly if anyone has deserved it from the squad that Jurgen assembled, Salah is one of them.

Yeah, imo best Liverpool player in my lifetime. If Hughes/Edwards/FSG don't want to pay the man what he wants, it's a damned shame and I'll miss him so much when he's gone.

Do you really think he’s asking for even more money than he’s on now? The only people who will pay those sort of wages are the Saudi’s, and he doesn’t want to go there just yet. He want’s to stay, he’s alluded to that numerous times. FSG have a history of being cheap cunts, so would you be surprised if that isn’t the case again here? 
 

Give him a two year deal on similar wages. I very much doubt he would reject those terms. His record this season shows that he isn’t slowing down so it’s not like he falls of a cliff next season. He is in unbelievable shape, physically.

Like I said, no one knows. Liverpool broke their structure for Salah last time so not sure why you bring up about the club being 'cheap cunts'.

I don't disagree with your point that he isn't slowing down and I'd have no problem with on him the same terms on a two year contract but we're not the ones paid to make that decision and have no idea what's gone on in negotiations. It's still a risk committing to that whatever shape he's in. History is littered with examples of players falling off a cliff in their later years so that's something the club have to weigh up. 

I think he'll end up signing anyway. I would also take anything Salah says publicly about his future with a pinch of salt, he's very good at playing the game.

It would be sad to see Salah leave to go and do a cliched stint at another club when he's on the verge of going down as one of Liverpool's greatest ever.

I can imagine he'll go to Saudi Arabia at some point but I hope he ends his professional career with Liverpool and goes straight to Saudi from here

Not so much because he's Muslim. But I can imagine the Saudis being more determined to get him because he is the games largest and most well known arab player.

I think we need a LB this window. Robertson is really struggling nowadays when he’s up against a pacey winger, which is pretty much them all. He doesn’t offer anywhere near as much going forward as he used to either. He’s an absolute legend, but I think his best days are way behind him now. Robinson, Ait-Nouri or Kerkez would all be brilliant signings.

I do think Robertson's decline is overstated, he's largely been fine bar the odd game and was fine yesterday apart from the ridiculous pull on Amad late on.

I agree that we need to start looking at another LB, an upgrade on Tsimikas who can eventually take over Robertson as first choice. Don't necessarily think it has to be this window though if whoever they want is not available in January

Really? I think Robertson's been pretty poor this season. His legs are going and I think it's time for Tsimikas to take over for him as first choice.

I think while he's still clearly got so much more to give to top tier football, it would be ridiculous if he settled for playing in a retirement league - and I think he feels the same way considering the form he's been in all season.

I think you’re understating it, if anything. Robertson has struggled all this season, and last season as well. Tsimikas has looked better when he’s been in the lineup, but even he isn’t reliable to be consistent.

I would be prioritising one of those names I mentioned, probably Kerkez because of his age and I think he has a higher ceiling than the others.

He's had a few stand out poor performances but I don't think he's been poor all season. If we could have rotated him a bit more, he'd benefit from that I'm sure but Tsimikas has been injured too
