Weird that all the dust has settled from the OpenAI debacle almost two weeks ago and we still don't know why the board tried to get rid of Altman. Weirdness galore. I would have liked it if they went over the MSFT instead of staying with the current company but they would have lost a really key person in the development process so I suppose its good they stuck where they were.

Power over tech: Government releases report on AI risks

GettyImages-1438947186.jpgCredit: Krongkaew/Getty Images

When it comes to the risks and rewards of AI, are we focused on the wrong questions?

With an interim report released by the government yesterday looking at ‘responsible AI’, the director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) says we should be focusing on the concentration of power in the industry, rather than the AI itself.

AI unlocks ancient text owned by Caesar's family

image.thumb.png.b54f914b0c42c95b0b740552592a419e.png Three students have won a $700,000 prize after using AI to read a 2,000-year-old scroll burnt during the Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79AD.

The ancient text was unreadable until now after being charred in the Roman town of Herculaneum during the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii.

It is thought to have belonged to Julius Caesar's father-in-law and talks of music and food.

AI deepfakes have us questioning everything we see – can science and journalism help?

download.thumb.png.65bec16c9c102260b5d7ec32ee1f901f.png

By Rachel McDonald, the Australian Science Media Centre

When social media platforms were recently flooded with deepfakes of Taylor Swift, it seemed like AI had hit the big time as the anti-hero of misinformation. Altered images have been part of the media landscape for decades, however, the recent rise of artificial intelligence has meant we can create faces that now appear more real than human faces
Professor Simon Lucey, Director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), says that while fake images were nothing new, the use of deep learning artificial intelligence techniques had led to an exponential increase in their use.

AI might be the best football coach

image.thumb.png.fae4c999e3d4dad5c26d8e2f5bd51fef.png

Sports teams may want to employ artificial intelligence (AI) coaches based on an analysis of the performance of one such algorithmic tactician.

AI system “TacticAI” is produced by the computer programming company DeepMind, owned by Google’s Alphabet Inc. It has been able to accurately predict the outcome of corner kicks in football as well as providing realistic and accurate tactical suggestions in matches, according to an analysis published in Nature Communications........

AI and satellite imager can spot fires 500x faster than on-ground

image.thumb.png.7c0e70218f093be2b890c3d9033f7c3c.png

Wildfire detection is set to reach new heights – literally – thanks to a special CubeSat in low Earth orbit.

This shoebox-sized satellite, Kanyini, was developed at the University of South Australia as part of the federally-funded SmartSat Cooperative Research Centre.

The SA Government is the key backer of the Kanyini mission, with space-based data collection for use by environmental agencies to monitor water quality, or for emergency services to mitigate fire activity as its priority.

The mission is due for launch later this year on a SpaceX Transporter-11.

Digital technologies, like AI, have the potential to revolutionise how health systems care for patients. The challenge lies in identifying the actions needed to integrate them.

A new report by the National Industry Innovation Network (NIIN) Health Alliance has named the major technology trends that can have genuine impact in the Australian health system in the coming year. They include:

  • augmented intelligences
  • simulations and simulacra
  • remote patient care
  • health system adaptability and dynamism
  • harnessing biotechnology breakthroughs

@nudge.  Random question. If the terminator hadn't been destroyed before Sarah Connor had John. Would it have figured out that it needed to kill John now and therefore override its programing?

I don't know mate, I didn't program it xD

xD I was having this conversation with my mate earlier whos a computer programmer. Apparently the real question is whether ai that can learn can override its programing. If the terminator could target John instead of Sarah that means it could override its original program which means it could turn on skynet. It was used as an example on a YouTube video I saw about potential dangers of ai

If we get to an AI that's able to override its programming and make decision independently, we're dangerously close to the whole sentience/consciousness/free will debate, which is going to be very, very messy. I think one important factor would be to see why it is overriding its programming in the first place  - in many cases, any deviation could probably be explained by the complex and sophisticated AI adapting and modifying its own programing based on new information/circumstances in order to achieve its pre-programmed main objective. If, however, it's overriding its programming seemingly to behave in a self-serving way, based on preferences, emotional factors, etc., then it is a different beast altogether.

ChatGPT doesn't know there's 3 r's in strawberry, so we're some way off that yet.

Yeah it's not something I'm worried about. It was just a conversation. But it could be one day. To be honest I think ai would probably decide we need protecting from ourselves. Who knows maybe it could make cardiff good

The racist AI deepfake that fooled and divided a community

download.thumb.png.a7907abca62901395feebbd3a186b922.png

When an audio clip appeared to show a local school principal making derogatory comments, it went viral online, sparked death threats against the educator and sent ripples through a suburb outside the city of Baltimore. But it was soon exposed as a fake, manipulated by artificial intelligence - so why do people still believe it’s real?
