My god what a horrible crash in the main race. It's Sophia Floersch going airborne and landing into the barriers/photographers hut. This is awful

Early reports say she's ok but at least two people critically injured.

I watched it before I fell asleep during the red flag period. I knew something horrible must have happened. Best wishes to Sohpia :( I read about a spinal fracture?

Nothing official yet, only that she is conscious and has been hospitalised for further examination. Same about the other driver (Tsuboi) involved in the crash that sent her flying, and a marshall and two photographers all appear to have survived the accident. There might be serious injuries (in fact I'd be surprised if there aren't), but the fact that all five are alive and conscious is a good sign for sure... Big props for the car engineers; to keep the driver alive in a huge crash like that is a big feat. The roll hoop seem intact and the whole cockpit looks better than one would expect, and it's not really design to survive an impact like that...

EDIT: spinal fracture officially confirmed just as I was typing this.

this is awful :( hope she makes a full recovery.

This and Wickens' crash are easily the worst in recent years.

According to her father she shows no paralysis symptoms though, so that's good news.

Yes "only" back pain apparently, so that's definitely a good sign! She's also very young, so a full recovery is much more likely either way. Gute Besserung! :(

Seems like the photographers/marshalls were relatively lucky too. They could have easily been killed if they stood a meter or so in a different direction.

Incredible... couldn't believe what I was seeing earlier.. At least she survived it although I don't know how she managed it... It all happened so quickly no one really had much chance to react...

Definitely very lucky to still be alive, but it truly is a credit to the engineers of the car as well. She went airborne under speed of almost 280 km/h, backwards, after already being involved in another crash, went through the catch fence and barriers, hit the photographers' bunker HEAD ON and then landed on the ground again. That somebody would somehow survive it seems unbelievable. A lot of luck and great engineering.

Very good point Nudge.. To think about a lot of those teams of people working away in the background, testing to ensure the safest possible vehicle is out on the track do deserve a whole lot of credit.. Think how difficult it must be to find that fine balance between lightness for speed but at the same time incorporating the maximum amount of safety features and structural integrity to keep the driver safe in the event of a crash... Obviously crash testing would not have been put under the the types of impact we saw today but fair to say that even though it was so horrific that she could come out of it alive is a credit to that team of people...

absolutely unreal she survived. The speed is almost unfathomable and equally so that she's only got spinal injuries. As @nudge alluded to, engineering of modern racing cars these days is so sophisticated and complicated but safety is always paramount no doubt - certainly helped her here.

The other fortunate thing is that she didn't go careering in to a spectator's stand where no doubt we'd be discussing sadder news of possible deaths.

Ufff, some harsh truth there.

Ticktum is a twat; that doesn't need further proof.

I didn't know that it essentially ruined Collard's F1 career before it had a chance to properly start though... I've seen the name occasionally in GT and touring car racing; but never connected it with that complete mad move by Ticktum.

Brilliant; he made the right call. Will be interesting to follow his learning curve, especially how fast he can adjust to the new car and Pirelli tyres.

Just a shame she can't brake on time .

Huh? Difficult to brake with 3 wheels if you saw the incident that lead up to the crash.

Not seen it

After 8 seconds you can see what happened. Apparently there was confusion with the flags. Some waved yellow flags, others didn't. So the car in front of Sophia slowed down without her realizing it.

Mick Schumacher will drive for Prema in Formula 2 next year. Excited to see him there 😊

Cracking news, perfect reason to be determined to watch F2 again next season, end up forgetting to set my alarm for the first race and not bother for the rest of the year xD. There's always 2020.
