Worldā€™s weirdest creatures: The fried egg jellyfish, the blobby invertebrate who could help beat cancer

How do you like your eggs? If the answer is, ā€˜fried, salty, and weirdly pulsing with lifeā€™ then read on.

With its yellow dome sitting on top of a smooth translucent bell, the fried egg jellyfish,Ā Cotylorhiza tuberculata, bears an uncanny resemblance to the popular breakfast item.

Beneath this egg-like bell is a frilly, ruffled ā€˜underskirtā€™ of trailing appendages. Some are tipped with purple blobs that house zooxanthellae, the same symbiotic algae that give certainĀ coralsĀ their characteristic hue. The symbiotic organisms receive a place to live, and in return, generate energy for their hosts viaĀ photosynthesis.

The fried egg jellyfish feeds on tiny aquatic organisms, such as zooplankton and phytoplankton, which it ingests via specialised tentacles called oral arms. It is common in the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Adriatic Seas, where the adult form can grow up to 35cm across.

Vast blooms of it can appear during the summer and autumn months, which can be an annoyance for swimmers. We should be more tolerant. The jellyfishā€™s sting has little or no effect on humans, and the blobby invertebrate could even prove to be our ally.

An extract derived from the fried egg jellyfish has been shown to possessĀ anticancer activity. So maybe one day, we will learn to love them; not just for their looks, but for their pharmaceutical value too.

Have you guys seen any bees, wasps or bumblebees so far? I've only seen a few bumblebees so far this year, and most of them were on the ground and looked like they were dying.Ā 

Kind of worrying.Ā

Loads of Bees swarming my Blackberry bush this time of year.. Wasps will come a bit later on, end of July/August normally..Ā

Ah nice. I hope to see some eventually. My bee hotels still have rooms available.Ā xDĀ I know wasps usually come a bit later, but with it being hot quite early, we often had them as early as May here in the last few years.Ā

I do have several water bowls across the garden yea. With stones in them so the bees can crawl out in case they fall in.Ā šŸ˜…

One of our daughter's friend's cat passed away last week and she was heartbroken as she had the cat for over 14 years, so, really to mend a broken heart and keep her other cat (3 years old) happy is to get another cat, she knows it would never replace the other one who died but this kitten she got is just a wee bundle of fluff and joy.Ā :x

The newly discovered spider namedĀ Douglassarachne acanthopodaĀ is described in a paperĀ publishedĀ in theĀ Journal of Paleontology.

Spiders evolved more than 150 million years before the dinosaurs. The oldest known fossil of these creepy crawlies is anĀ Attercopus fimbriungusĀ specimen which is 380 million years old.

ā€œD.Ā acanthopodaĀ comes from the famous Mazon Creek locality in Illinois and is about 308 million years old,ā€ says lead author of the new study Paul Selden from the University of Kansas and the Natural History Museum of London...........
