Should be a walk over for Peru. After all, people are always surprised when South American teams beat European teams and Argentina trounced Italy, and Italy are better than Australia…….

I thought I remembered this scenario of Australia needing to beat a South American nation to qualify for World Cups had been changed?

We moved into Asia after the 06 World Cup, but yeah we finished poorly in our recent qualifiers so have to go through two playoffs. Can’t see us winning this but it’ll be close I think. 2-1 Peru.

Are people surprised when South American teams beat European? That’s odd.

Peru should win this because they beat Croatia in a friendly before the last world cup. And Croatia beat Denmark who beat Australia. If you don't believe that you are a euro snob

Apparently so…..

I generally am. Obviously there's levels to it. But I'd always expect a Netherlands or France to beat the Argies or Brazil. I'd expect Germany or Italy to beat Uruguay. I'd expect Denmark to beat Paraguay or Peru ect ect.

England are a notable exception to the rule, because I always expect them to lose when put under any real pressure.

I think British football analysts usually have an admiration for any good Brazil side. Similar for Argentina, but perhaps leaning more towards respect than admiration.

All the rest are generally presented as amateurish fodder for high level professional sides. Which is slightly crazy with majority of the best South American players playing in Europe somewhere before they turn 21.

0-0 at half time, Peru have created one chance whereas we’ve had about 5-6, granted nothing too clear cut but a very encouraging first half. Peru literally didn’t do much at all. Always find that they play football bizarrely. Goalkeeper taking ages to take kicks, shape a bit all over the place. However, I’m expecting a very different second half. If they get on the ball more and particularly out wide then I think that’s where they will be most dangerous. Their pace is quite frightening.

Atkinson off for Karacic is what I’d do. Duke to 60 then maybe Maclaren. I don’t see many goals in side. Boyle been dangerous though, in more so a creative way. Irvine is a threat but yeh nothing like a Cahill, where you knew a goal would come at some point. Nervy second half ahead but incredibly encouraging.

There's never been a lot of difference with the standard between these two sides. I don't know where all the pessimism came from with certain Australian fans. Sure, Peru are probably slightly better technically, but Australia have many strengths of their own. The Aussies arguably edged that 1st half. I hope Australia go through and I think their winning mentality could just get them to the World Cup instead of Peru.

What an effort there by Behich who nearly scored. He went on a determined run, skipped past the challenges of 2 Peruvian players and then his shot went narrowly wide of the post. What a goal that would have been. That was Australia's best chance of the match.

Hrustic with another great chance for Australia! Mabil cut the ball back for Hrustic and Hrustic's left foot shot at goal was well saved by the Peruvian goalkeeper.

Two great chances in the last 7-8 minutes of the game for us. Clearly the better side. Peru legit can’t pass tonight. Which means, because it’s football (worst sport in the world) Peru will likely get a winner in extra time. :(

This is surely going to penalties with only a couple of minutes remaining. I'd tip the Aussies to probably win the penalties. Ryan is a keeper I've always rated.

WTF! Ryan is being taken off and Andrew Redmayne is being brought on to replace him! Never heard of him to be honest, clearly must be a penalty saving specialist.

I’m crying already. He can save penalties but why take off Ryan!
