Newcastle United Takeover

Ignoring the human rights and blood money conversation, after it became impossible to watch football legally in Saudi Arabia this did feel like an inevitably. The PL have a right to protect their brand and more importantly the jobs of all their employees (even more so in the current climate). They're never going to change an entire culture where people expect everything for a small price via illegal streaming channels.

Im gutted for Newcastle United fans. Everything about that football club screams next major investment because of the scalability. Hopefully the other parties are still interested in investment.

Problem is preventing or approving the takeover does nothing to protect jobs around piracy. The club has been used as a pawn.

Tens of millions of investment in Tyneside is lost unfortunately. Deals with a council that has lost £67m through COVID, including on housing projects was all in the pipeline. The takeover was more than the Saudi's, it was also the richest property developer brothers in Britain who've been doing a bit of development in the city and were going to ramp that up around the club.

Newcastle takeover: Mike Ashley still '100% committed' to Saudi deal - Lee Charnley

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is "100% committed" to the Saudi Arabian-backed takeover of the club, says managing director Lee Charnley.

On Thursday, the consortium aiming to buy the club for £300m said it was pulling out with "regret" after losing patience with delays.

The deal had been scrutinised under the Premier League's owners' and directors' test for almost four months.

But in a statement, Charnley seemed to suggest the deal could be resurrected.

I'm just catching up, but why are clubs upset by this? Middle Eastern ownership isn't new, and the league without Mike Ashley seems like a better place.

BEIN sport wrote to them all asking them to take a stand as retaliation for IPTV piracy of Premier League games going on in Saudi Arabia. Clubs desperate for Qatari sponsorship funds were quick to jump at their aid.

All these Qatar conspiracy theories are fine, but fucking Amnesty International came out against it. As did Jamal Khashoggi's widow. Unless they're in Qatar's pocket as well, there's a bit more to it than unscrupulous football clubs wanting a bit of extra cash.

Thoughts first and foremost go out to the Newcastle fans who made a show of themselves equivocating and making excuses for KSA's crimes and now won't even have a good football team to show for it.

Morality seemingly was never a stumbling block to approval unless the request to add the state of Saudi Arabia as a director was a last minute test of that. The holdup was entirely about piracy complaints from Qatar according to journalists with Premier League sources. If clubs were part of that holdup it's unlikely to be about Amnesty International joining an NUFC fans video call with thousands and who opposed Man City's takeover, more likely to be about what actually held it all up. Or club involvement is being overblown and exaggerated by Staveley.

If Manchester United opposed it when they have deals with the Saudi government and receive sponsorship money from a PIF owned company then you'd know with them it has nothing to do with morality.

At the end of day the Premier League didn't get the answers to the questions it wanted despite the insistence by the consortiun that they had answered them. It would be nice to know what they were, where they came from and what the insufficient answer was and the timings.

When PIF shares in major companies entitle particular voting rights, does MBS have the ability to decide which way PIF will vote, soft or hard power. The answer is probably yes. So the directorship request may be legitimate. This takeover will stay dead because the Saudi state won't bend to that requirement.

It's clear that Staveley, the Rueben's and PIF want to use the supporters to get what they want or need from the Premier League. That seems to be taking shape via a petition to the Prime Minister for an independent inquiry into the takeover process which has 25000 signatures in 24 hours.

What's not clear is which side is in the right. We don't know if the requests from the Premier League are legitimate and fair and thus PIF just don't want to answer them or if the requests and process is being manipulated to not give approval.

Chi is great though. Superb letter.

Your right, your club has been used as a pawn, but if the PL lose money on a global scale due to piracy then jobs will inevitably be a consequential effect.

Whilst I feel for the fans and the community I wouldnt give up hope just yet. There are still interested parties, and Mike Ashley seems to be willing to leave in the current climate. I imagine there will be some haggling with other parties but i still think theres just as much chance he will leave in the next 12 months as there was a fortnight ago.

I'm not convinced there are others any time soon. The club has effectively been for sale for 10 years and only now has someone come up with the required funds. I suspect that's the real reason Ashley is panicking.

A bloke who has been in jail for financial fraud is supposedly negotiating on behalf of Henry Mauriss :4_joy:

No doubt the Premier League would pass that fit and proper test within a couple of minutes

2 week deadline.

Here's what one journalist wrote in early July suggesting Qatar are behind Mauriss bid in order to derail the Saudi's.

Wajahat S. Khan wrote: “According to sources privy to conversation and written correspondence between them, Mauriss was pushed to make the bid by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, owner of PSG.

“The sources, who chose to remain anonymous, claim Al-Khelaifi is baiting Mauriss.

“If the American disrupts the Saudi-bid and buys Newcastle, then Al-Khelaifi’s beIN Sports ‘may buy’ Mauriss’ Clear TV.”

Newcastle takeover collapsed after bidders rejected Premier League arbitration offer

32 minutes ago      Newcastle

The potential takeover of Newcastle collapsed after a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium rejected the Premier League's offer of arbitration to determine who would own the club.

The group ended its £300m bid to buy the club off Mike Ashley in June.

The deal was still being scrutinised under the Premier League's owners' and directors' test.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has now commented on the deal for the first time publicly.

In a letter to Newcastle upon Tyne Central MP Chi Onwurah, Masters said in June the Premier League board made a "clear determination as to which entities it believed would have control over the club" after the proposed purchase.

Takeover attempt #631

I've actually found Chopra to usually be bang on when giving his opinion about Newcastle.

However having been in rehab for a gambling addiction, banned from horse racing for corruption and being involved with drug dealers, the fit and proper test might be tricky if he's a director :4_joy:
