When the player dives then just admit it straight up? If the first comment on here was a Liverpool saying Fabinhos had himself a little dive there then there's no argument.

Agree with this and its all @LFCMike's fault but then again I think we can all agree it alcohol's fault. 

On a more serious note, from next season and the introduction of VAR how does the punishment work for simulation leading to a goal?

I don't think it makes a difference in instances like this one. I only think they use it to check goals, penalties and potential red card incidents.

Yeah don't think this kind of stuff can be avoided or prevented through VAR. As the free kick would have already been given and the play has resumed after a stoppage.
