  1. And they say Sci-Fi is boring (after reading the last few posts) Started watching Snowpiercer and I truly can't tell if I like it or not. Jennifer C as a villain/antagonist is interesting I will say that.

  3. Apparently this used to be a village until erosion took it's toll, now it's just one old biddy holding out on her own... Think I would opt for my daily milk and paper being delivered if you don't mind.. Another nice camera spot for @nudge though... https://9gag.com/gag/aBmm9eQ

  11. That was a good read. So in essence, what has been happening so far in many cases is that the AI didn't remove the bias, but rather automated it On a more serious note, when it comes to facial recognition, it seems like a combination of the quality (or lack thereof) of algorithm training data and physical properties of the universe. I think it's safe to assume that facial recognition is likely to be more accurate on people with lighter skin tones, because more reflected light means more data allowing the software to make a match more accurately, whereas it is more error-prone on people with darker skin? Also regarding Amazon, it's not surprising their recruitment AI tool turned out to be crap. I mean, even their regular internal search algorithm is fucking horrible when you are trying to find some product on their website!

  14. A photographer stands all alone in the desert. Racing toward him is Bruce Springsteen in a convertible — and the deep darkness of a massive thunderstorm. The towering cumulonimbus cloud darkens the sky to a piercing black. A cloud of dust trails behind Springsteen’s car, which is lit by the little remaining light. "Soon it began to rain as flashes of lightning filled the valley,” photographer Eric Meola wrote in his new book “Fierce Beauty: Storms of the Great Plains.” “The hypnotic scene etched itself into our eyes and minds, and a few days later Bruce wrote the lyrics to a song called 'The Promised Land.’ ” The song goes: “There’s a dark cloud rising from the desert floor I packed my bags and I’m heading straight into the storm Gonna be a twister to blow everything down That ain’t got the faith to stand its ground.” One of the photos from that day eventually became the cover photo for Springsteen’s album “The Promise.” “It was great to be out in a convertible, racing the storm with the guy who wrote the song ‘Thunder Road,’ ” the photographer told CNN. “How do you top that for a desert road trip in America?” That was 1977.
