Bottas has had a howler there. He hasn't tended to do so well in traffic as a Mercedes driver either. Long afternoon for him tomorrow.

What it does do is give Red Bull a bit of role reversal. On one hand, Verstappen will be pissed at getting beaten by a team-mate because he probably can't remember how it feels. On the other hand, he's been on the wrong end of the 2-on-1 strategy situation when battling Mercedes for victories. Tomorrow, the boot is on the other foot from the start. I believe Perez is also starting on the soft tyres having run on those in Q2, not sure what the differential is like at this track for starting on the clean or dirty side of the grid. Could be a spicy run into the first braking zone.

Some interesting team-mate dynamics though the field. Ocon put some manners on Alonso, Perez outqualifies Verstappen, Stroll ahead of Vettel again, Ricciardo was taking a pounding from Norris but has oddly ended up qualifying in front due to Lando's lap time being deleted, and Latifi managed to give Russell a real run for his money.

This track suits the Mercedes more than some others do, and there's still nothing between the two cars. I don't think we've seen Verstappen quite at his best over the first two weekends, he's probably feeling the pressure of knowing this is his first real chance in the championship. I think Red Bull have the slightly better package and they have every reason to believe they can match Mercedes on development. Max needs a little bit extra, currently feel like he's running at 100% whereas Hamilton is running at 102%. Verstappen has the ability to find a bit more, and probably needs to to win the championship, perhaps Perez beating him this afternoon will be a blessing in disguise and get him back to his very best.

Hamilton on pole, only 0.83 between Lewis and Max in third.

If Perez keeps improving and Bottas carries on like he is. RB will win the constructors.

It is definitely promising, the difference between the top 8 is less than half a second... Hope for a good race tomorrow.

It's a pity Norris' time got deleted; he's been phenomenal.

I was gunning for Norris to get pole.

Smallest gap between 1st and 8th since 2012 according to F1 social media. We've needed it too. How many times has Bottas qualified 0.4s off Hamilton and still started 3rd or even 2nd? You've got to take into account that it's a short lap so that time difference is a slightly smaller percentage of the lap than it would be on many other circuits but still a very big step in the right direction for the sport.
