Next England Manager - Lee Carsley?

Recommended Posts

Got to say Carsley has this u21 team firing, not sure I’ve ever seen an England u21 play football this good and also look solid/a unit.

Southgate won’t be around forever and this crop of players will be the next to step up. Thoughts?

I also say no. It's a bit different to Southgate making the step up from the U21s, as at least Southgate's got history of being an England player. I think that's got him a bit more ready to deal with the sort of ego that you'd find yourself managing as England manager.

I think he’s need a few tournaments minimum at U21 level to impress for the job, not just to show competency at international level but because most of the squad will have been managed by him in some capacity if he were to take over. Not sure the likes of Kane, Sterling etc would give him the benefit of the doubt in the way they did Southgate.

Yeah if he's staying at the U21s for a while (assuming he always gets them playing at this level), I don't see the problem with moving him to the actual international team as then the vast majority of the players will be pretty familiar with him. I think Southgate having the benefit of being in an England side that actually made it far in a tournament is probably what makes him so well suited to being England manager tbh - I think he knows what he's got to instill in the squad to mentally be ready for going deep into a tournament, even if tactics aren't always the greatest. And tbh I think with international management, simple tactics and good management get you pretty far - so I can understand why Southgate's the best England manager in our lifetimes.

I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do. Won the euros so why not.

I think winning the euros will make up for that. If you are looking at English managers Howe is probably the strongest but I think Carsleys international experience will help. Even if it is u21

I was talking to someone last night about this. Not saying it'd gonna happen but wondered what people's thoughts are. Hyperthetically say pep says he will manage England but we will have to wait a year. Could we put in a temporary manager for a year while we wait for pep or is it to risky. Not sure what the skedule for world cup qualifying is.

I doubt it. Can't recall a time where that's happened. Probably not the best prep for England either playing a certain way under temp manager and then changing just before World Cup.

WC qualifying starts March 2025.

Fair enough. But when it's someone as good as pep is it worth the risk?

Dunno if it's worth the risk. Managers like Pep take time to get their philosophy through to players at the club level - international managers don't have nearly as much time to get their ideas across. I think that's typically why international football generally has more simplistic tactics than club football.

I think we'd just be wanting to appoint the best manager available for the job. If Pep says "yeah I'm interested, but not for a year" I think the FA's either got to say "will paying you a shitload more change your mind" or "sorry pal, maybe next time we need a manager."

Didn't Pep say he wants to manage Brazil one day?

Ukraine top England's Under-21 European Championship qualification Group and Ukraine convincingly beat England 3-2 in their group match on neutral territory. Ukraine were better than England in that match and both teams are much better than the rest of the teams in the group. I think we can only judge how good this England team is against the likes of Ukraine and other top teams at Under-21 level. Beating teams like Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan and Luxembourg at that age group is not a big deal. Even the Serbian team have not performed well, they drew with Luxembourg and lost to Northern Ireland.

I think that Lee Carsley still has a lot to prove. There are some very good players in that England Under-21 team, but it's when Carsley manages to get England beating other top teams at that age level that we can start to judge how good he is.
