So I'm guessing Basel's recent history helps (getting further than a Dutch side in 17/18 CL) for example.

Yeah I think both Austria and Switzerland benefited heavily from Red Bull Salzburg (semis in the EL) and Basel (knockout stages in the CL) respectively whereas Ajax failed to qualify for both the CL and EL in 17/18... Carnivore Chris
Switzerland and Austria have the same amount of teams as the Netherlands(and other countries like Portugal, Turkey and Greece) with 2 and also all have the same amount in the Europa league with 3. Russia have 3 in each competition just like France with Spain, England, Italy and Germany having 4 in the Champs league and 3 in the Europa league. Strange that Austria are ahead of Holland though, given Ajax got to the EL final a couple of years ago. Not sure about how other side's have done in the other years though

Azeem
Van der Sar: “We won the league, we won the cup, and we were very close to the final of the Champions League. Yet we still have to play 2 qualification rounds to qualify for the CL. This can’t be good. Someone needs to explain why number 4 of La Liga does qualify.”

I'd rather a champion of this Dutch League gets a group stage spot over 4th placed PL/La Liga/Italian side. Clue is in the name of the competition... Eco
It makes sense though right? It's based on the coefficients and previous years results. It's why the winner fo the Estonian League doesn't get straight into the Group Stages. Ajax had a great year, and a magical run in the CL, but they, and the league have had a few really bad years which is why they have to play in the qualifying rounds.
