Pilot plant opens in Victoria to test lithium-ion battery recycling

image.thumb.png.ee25ca40a154178a23991f0d02993220.png

A pilot facility trialling safer and more environmentally friendly recycling of lithium-ion batteries has begun operating in Victoria.

Australia produces around 3,300t of lithium-ion battery (LIBs) waste each year.

As of 2021, only about 10% of Australia’s LIBs were being recycled. Globally, that figure is about 5%. There is a long way to go before LIBs reach the 98 per cent recycling rate that has been achieved for lead acid batteries........

Nuclear SMRs too immature for Australia now, says top body

Nuclear small modular reactors (SMRs) might be a feasible source of power for Australia in the mid- to late-2040s, but are unlikely to be of use before then, according to a new report.

Iconic New Zealand species are relatively recent Australian “immigrants”

image.thumb.png.57bbce641f4908ae4d250806298ca620.png

Some of New Zealand’s most iconic species may actually have relatively recently trekked over from Australia according a more than 2-decades-long palaeontological study.

Zealandia’s true ancients

Researchers have found that the truly ancient species of New Zealand are animals like the kākāpō, small wrens, bats and freshwater limpets. These lineages have been present since the ancient continent Zealandia “unzipped” from Gondwanaland between 85 and 65 million years ago.

Kiwimoa and takahē – birds often associated with Aotearoa (the Māori-language name for New Zealand; pronounced au·tay·uh·row·uh) – arrived on Zealandia more recently.
