6666 Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 (edited) Just found out that the former hipster's favourite, Borussia Dortmund, have a sponsorship deal with an arms manufacturer. They actually managed to be the bigger evil in a final against Real Madrid. Fairplay to the fans protesting against it. We've heard of sponsorships with indirect ties to things people would consider unpleasant but can't remember such a direct link. Edited June 2, 2024 by 6666 Quote
Rucksackfranzose Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 Yep, they did. Wouldn't be surprised if they lost a good numbers of their members over this, rightfully so I've to add. Quote
Danny Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 I didn’t want to comment too soon cos as easy as it would be to throw at dig at them considering how condescending German fans can be at times about football outside of Germany, I’d imagine Dortmund’s support would be very good at challenging this sort of nonsense. Spike Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 It’s big news but they aren’t the first team to have an insane sponsor. Siemens for Real for instance. Quote

Most big enterprises are debatable from an ethical view, granted. Still an arms manufacturer is yet another quality of evil than eg Siemens and many others. Moderator Tommy Posted June 3, 2024 Moderator Posted June 3, 2024 Apparently they offered Borussia Mönchengladbach 10 Mio Euros as well, but Gladbach rejected them. 2 Quote
Rucksackfranzose Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 (edited) On a sidenote for people, who don't follow German football news. With all justified rejection of Borussia Dortmund's decision we can't spare DFB from criticism neither, given they banned former Buli team Homburg from being sponsored by condom manufacturer London at the end of the 8ties and amateur club SF Oberwürzbach from being sponsored by a porno star around last decade, with the justification such sponsoring wouldn't be compatible with DFB's moral values. Being sponsored by an arms manufacturer is, though? Edited June 3, 2024 by Rucksackfranzose 4 Quote

Being sponsored by an arms manufacturer is, though? Arms manufacturers shouldn't be allowed to generally advertise outside of things like weapon trade shows... but I certainly don't think they should have their logo plastered on kits of a football club which is primarily meant to represent a community. Shame on Borussia Dortmund for this, honestly. Has done a lot to tarnish their image with a lot of neutral fans, from what I can tell... and understandably so. 1 Quote
Inverted Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 I don't think I even understand the commercial sense (from the manufacturer's POV) of advertising with a football club. Is some defence minister in a foreign country going to tune into a Dortmund game and think "maybe we should give these Rheinmetall guys a go"? Quote

Think it's more about trying to get rid of the villain image arms manufacturer have, rightfully so, in peoples mind. Seem to remember having read Rheinmetall's CEO saying something of trying to attract people to apply for a job , who wouldn't consider working for an arms manufacturer a few month ago, since they were having difficulties to fill their work force. You would be surprised, arms manufacturerare among the best paying companies in Germany and still all have that issue. Apparently money isn't everything that counts, after all. Edit: On a sidenote, Rheinmetall are apparently serious about their sports washing, since they signed a sponsoring contract with an ice hockey first tier team as well.
