The Portugal manager at the last World Cup wasn't scared to drop Ronaldo in some matches to benefit the team. Martinez has never been able to challenge or manage egos in his dressing room which is why we're treated to Ronaldo taking every free kick and shooting from any distance or angle. Fernando Santos dropped Cristiano Ronaldo for the last World Cup and thus did the hard part. Martinez never needed to recall Ronaldo unless he rated him. So he obviously rates him. I agree that Ronaldo is selfish at times, but then again players like him do bring leadership quality and lift the morale of the team. Earlier one was worse considering the individual quality available from both teams. Maybe if the commentators stopped licking Ronaldo's arse and focused on other players like Cancelo who bossed the 2nd half, and the Slovenia defence as well, the perception might be different. I don't think Martinez has got control of this side anymore. He's got younger more mobile strikers available. If he was scoring goals fair enough but he's not even scoring goals.
